Steem Monsters Sunday!: It Keeps Getting Better!

Just as my excitement was at an all time high last week with the end of the previous Season, I had thought it could not get any better! However, the development team and the community continue to work hard to expand the experience even more as a huge announcement dropped this week. The team has not only finally launched the in game currency (and token) called Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) but they have also added content to mix up the experience for players that continue to explore the world that is becoming Splinterlands.

The addition of DEC and the way it was deployed was magnificent as it incentivizes players even more to play more frequently in addition to introducing similar concepts from the Steem protocol as “bandwidth” could be used and recharged as you earn it. The have also done great things for long time players (like myself) in that Alpha cards (as well as Gold Foils) would provide more DECs when used in battle. I feel that this implementation has given the game what it has needed; ensuring that more players populate the battlefields in order to improve the user experience and allow better matchmaking.

They have also added an additional layer to the Steem Monsters economy as there is now a shop that players can go to to acquire now a numbers of items to use in game in addition to the Booster Packs. This shop includes Potions, Skins, and Orbs! Potions are items to be used in game to improve chances to acquire additional cards, new Legendary cards, Gold Foil cards, and even a mystery gift! Skins changes the appearance of the cards we already use but do not alter their statistics. Seeing them in action has been interesting as I have struggled to recognized which cards they represent.

Lastly, Orbs have been introduced which are new types of cards only available by opening these packs. Like Booster packs, each Orb holds five cards to open and include brand new cards introduce into the game. The Collection is called Winds of Change and will be limited in nature like the Alpha and Beta editions. I still have not seen all of the new cards but have seen a couple of strong ones in battle which has led to some interesting battles and has also shifted some of the strategies I would normally do when battling, particularly in tournaments. These additions will certainly make the future battles quite interesting and keep us competitive players on our toes.

I have started to acquire some of the newest cards directly on the market which have been priced quite high when compared to previous introduced card editions. I started with some of the Epics and Legendaries as they have the likelihood of going up in more value as I learned when the new Legendary Summoners were released. These cards are now prohibitively expensive for my taste as a maximum level card now costs hundreds of dollars. As I continue to watch the market, I have plans to buy some of these Orbs but have been slow at accumulating DEC for many reasons. There are ways to purchase it but I believe that I don’t have the patience to deal with the process right now. I may be looking around to some Mavericks to try and buy with some fiat some way or another (done!).

As I write this, I await my fourth tournament of the day! It was a slow week for me playing tournaments as I was traveling with limited availability this week but the handful of tournaments I played in this week had some positive results including one that got me some DEC today! I recently learned that I had reached the top 100 of players that have won prizes on @steemmonsters! I had not thought that I had been very successful as I have still yet to win any single tournament (first place). However, I have placed on a number of them which have provided some great rewards so they continue to have my attention as they are great ways to leverage the Collection I have been able to accumulate!
