A Different Type of Travel

I am traveling again and although a portion will have to do with business, the main purpose of this trip is to confront something that I have been fearing for years; watching a Parent’s health deteriorate and seeing how I can help and improve that fact, if at all possible. I still remember when I was young, I would fear the lose of my Parents the most as I could not even think of a world without them. However, they did a great job raising me and with maturity have learned the cycle of life which never ends.

I lost one of them ten years ago and it was so quick that I could react to help or even truly mourn the lose after only a couple of weeks. I think I took it hard but also knew that the amount of travel and work I had at that point would make me get through it by focusing on my career like my parent would have wanted. It also made me realize how important my success was for the remaining Parent as it will mostly be me now providing for the household. However, I have always thought that I could have done more while they were living to show my appreciation.

I now find myself reflecting upon how to manage this unexpected shift in health for my remaining Parent. I want to be more involved so that it can be seen that I genuinely care about the well-being of a deserving person. I say this not because it is my own parent, but because of the great person they have been to others surrounding them. I have seen first hand how selfless they have been and only wonder why this is coming to be the way it is.

I have a long list of tasks to accomplish over the next couple of days as the health issue is not one of immediate critical risk but I believe worst; it is degenerate over time which makes a long and painful journey for all those involved. Thinking that there will be a day that I can have a conversation with someone I know very well but that no longer recognizes me is a tough path but one we must prepare for. The amount of documentation and learning I have been preparing is daunting but I have often said that we need to stand up to challenges and not avoid them.

This is not the type of journey we prepare for but I know that it is the right one to have as I owe everything I am to my Parents. I often look back and finds documents of them both when I was younger and have no idea how they managed to accomplish getting me out of the wrong places and focus on education and something worth doing with the little they have. The sacrifices they made was one that made a difference in my life and that of my family now so I will focus on making my own.
