Zoolander: The best comedy I ever saw by accident

in #films3 years ago

I absolutely love this film and I hang around with a group of people that also love it and we quote it regularly. When we whip out at Zoolander quote in public and someone else gets it, we know straight away that this is the kind of person we want to be pals with.

I'm sure I would have seen it eventually, but the reason why I ever saw it in theaters in the first place is a big part of the reason why I hold this film so high up on my list of favorite comedies ever.

If you somehow managed to not see this film you really should go and see it unless you are some artsy film-school type that doesn't enjoy silly comedies. The movie dives into the realm of male modeling and well, has that ever been done before?

I don't know for certain, but I think that this was a real breakout role for Ben and it also ended up getting him stuck in a bit of a rut where it seemed mandatory that he had to be in films with Owen Wilson - who has amazing chemistry with Stiller in this movie.

These two were so great together that I was almost able to forget about Owen's very strange nose for a little while.

Male models are idiots (as depicted in the film, I have no idea if that is true in real life - I presume it is) and their oblivious to the world outside of modeling is wonderfully captured in this film that is just a laugh riot from start to finish.

The storyline is preposterous, the scenarios mimic what would happen in real life between rivals but are done in an extremely silly manner such as the "walk off" that has lots of references to what a real fight would actually be like.

Basically this movie is fantastic from start to finish and it is one that I have seen dozens of times and would gladly watch again on any day.

Now on to how I accidentally came to see it.

The movie was released in 2001 back before we used the internet for every damn thing in our lives, so we didn't just find out about everything in the world that was going on or even what was going to be in cinemas.

One day I went to the cinema to see a particular film and I don't recall exactly what that was. I want to say it was some sort of super-hero film that everyone was looking forward to. Originally, I thought it was Batman Begins but that wasn't released until 4 years later. Anyway, I went to the cinema to see some other film and it was sold out for the entire day in all of the 5 theaters it was being shown in. Me and my girlfriend were already there so instead we just chose a random film that was starting near the time that we were there.

Neither of us had ever heard of Zoolander but it was starting at the right time so we chose that.

We laughed our butts off the entire time. I think a lot of this was because (and it is going to sound like I am tooting my own horn now) she was actually a lower-level model at the time and was kind of cringing at how a lot of what was depicted in the movie is actually kind of true as far as what goes on behind the scenes for runways is concerned.

Should I watch it?

If it wasn't clear by what I have written above the answer to this is a definitive "yes". That is of course unless you are one of those people that needs your films to be thought-provoking and artsy in order to find them entertaining. This film will provoke thought, but only the stupid kind.
