Pet Semetary (2019 remake): It's ok, but did we really need this?

in Netflix & Streaming3 years ago

Has Hollywood completely run out of ideas? Are we now going to go back and remake every single Stephen King movie instead of coming up with actual new an inventive ideas? Well guess what? This film made $80 million so you can go ahead and bet on the 2nd thing happening.

Don't get the wrong idea, I am not saying that this film was bad because it wasn't. However, if you have any knowledge of the first film, or the crappy second one, then you already know basically everything that is going to happen outside of a few key differences that kind of catch you off guard because you were expecting the opposite to happen. Unfortunately, these shock moments are pretty much all the film has going for it other than some pretty solid acting and less reliance on child actors, and that part of it is pretty good.

However, they basically have the same story but just swapped out Herman Munster for John Lithgow in the role of "Jud."

Big city family moves to small town next to dangerous road, big city family wants to return to big city but makes the best of it, big city family has cat get killed by car, buries cat in what their neighbor and everyone in the community knows to be a dangerous place to bury anything, cat comes back to life but is very different, family ends up burying humans there despite seeing that the cat came back evil. Bad stuff ensues.

Except this time it has more modern cameras and better lighting than back in the 80's I guess. Plus there is CGI which thankfully, is used sparingly.

The movie isn't terrible and honestly, if there hadn't already been 2 of these I would probably be singing the film's praises but unfortunately, except for a few key moments and the slightly different ending, you have already seen this film if you watched either of the other two. This one is just less ridiculous than the 2nd one, and has better production value than the first.

They did a really good job with that trailer; I'll give them that.

Should I watch it?

So I can't really recommend that anyone that has seen both the original and the remake watch this but maybe it would be worth seeing if you only saw the original one but never the second film. If you haven't ever seen either of the previous ones, then I give a profound "yes" answer to whether or not you should see this. However, even though they made this very well, if you have already seen the first ones, you know the story, and even though it is well-made, this makes it boring.
