New Girl on Netflix: Just another show whose limited success I don't understand

This series has been around for a while now and I have tried at several different instances to get in there and understand why it is that people like this show - and I don't know many who do - but it's been around for nearly a decade so someone must be watching it... right?

It stars Zooey Deschanel as "Jessica" the main character in the center of the story and the one responsible for a lot of the narration that goes on during the story. Very early on in the story her long-term relationship ends and she ends up moving away and brashly moving into a loft apartment in Los Angeles with people she doesn't know but are around her age in her early 30's.

The story basically just follows their lives and how it is that people interact with one another, the issues that many people in their early 30's face, and how in order to spice the show up a bit the kind of force relationships between the roommates on one another in a variety of ways. Most of these "varieties" I can't explain in any great detail because I didn't watch very much of it and this is because I just don't find it to be terribly entertaining.

This is where the show, in my mind, is kind of difficult to grasp on to and why I never really stuck around to feel any sort of connection with the people in the story.

It feels as though I am watching a show about nothing for the most part and its direction-style kind of mimics a bit of SCRUBS, some Ally McBeal, and maybe a more grown-up version of Melrose Place with fewer characters but sadly, not nearly as good as any of those things.

It becomes evident that they are trying to be artsy in their own unique way and I guess some people appreciate this. I just didn't find the humor to be very funny nor did I find the drama to be particularly compelling either. Jessica can't find love.... there, that's the plot of every episode I've seen.

I feel also as though the show was never expected to be popular enough to carry on because according to what little I watched, New Girl seems to go into a circular pattern repeating the same scenarios over and over again of always looking for love for Jessica and how it never works out for her.

It seems as though I am not alone in this opinion because in the 7 seasons that were made, the viewership steadily declines starting at 8 million in season one and ending with barely over 2 million in the final season which aired a few years ago.

It was wildly hailed as being innovative and fresh when it first started out and was actually one of Fox's highest rated shows at the time. I guess I just don't have much in common with people who enjoyed it because I found the stories to be pretty thin and lacking and also for the overall subject matter to be borderline stupid.

Should I watch it?

I don't mean to be fully down on this show because I actually do like Zooey Deschanel but this show is just so similar to so many other shows out there that I don't feel as though it stands out very much on its own. I would say have a look at a few episodes in the early years and see what you think but for me this is a very boring show that I would easily bypass in order to watch almost anything else.
