Masters of the Universe: Revelation coming to Netflix

in Netflix & Streaming3 years ago

It's been a while since I was excited about anything that Netflix has made for various reasons. I feel as though over the past 2 years or maybe more that Netflix has been a bit of a source of propaganda and has an agenda. I'm really hoping that they don't try to inject one of my favorite youth cartoons with modern-day social-justice crap, but I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that since it is a fantasy setting that maybe they'll leave that alone for this.

If you were a kid in the 80's like I was, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a big part of your life. The after-school cartoon was pretty epic and resulted in just about everyone I know purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of plastic action figures and castles and what not. I'm relatively certain that my family wasted at least a cheap car's worth of money on this stuff.

Had I taken care of these things instead of beaten the hell out of them, they would probably be worth some money these days

The cartoon was meant for kids of course and it was extremely tame in the way that nobody ever died or even bled for that matter. This was true of all combat oriented cartoons back in the 80s even though all the combatants were armed to the teeth nobody ever got hurt or died, the good guys or the bad guys.

Times have changed a bit since the 80's though, and this being on Netflix means that it could be adult themed for all we know at this point.

The animation looks a lot more crisp and this is expected since back when it was on TV when I was a kid, there weren't many computers used for anything at all, let alone CGI and animation studios that use computers exclusively for their productions.

For fans of the old cartoons or even people that are not familiar with it at all I think this will be a potentially fantastic journey for fans of animated series. Another aspect of this that excites me is the fact that unlike the cartoons from the 80's, this series is going to have an overall story whereas the episodes from the 80's were generally not related to the episode that came before. They would introduce new characters every now and the sake of selling more toys and what not, but mostly each 25 minute cartoon was meant to stand on its own and prior knowledge of other episodes wasn't necessary. I don't even remember if they were broadcast in order. What can I say? I was very young in 1983.

I also found out that Mark Hamill will be doing the voice of Skeletor, so I suppose that is pretty cool even though I have to say that it is a strange choice since I don't know if Hamill has the voice-acting chops to play a raspy supervillain. I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

I'm not going to try to rate this, because I haven't seen any of them. I do know that it is something that I am extremely excited about it being added to the Netflix library and there are probably a lot of people that are now in their 40's that are going to feel the same way.

Let's just hope that Netflix doesn't screw it up by trying to make it all PC. I'm hoping they'll make it gory, scary, and fun and not try to drag things like sexuality, feminism, and racial justice into it all. They do have a tendency to do that and I am just hopeful that they don't destroy my childhood memories by trying to be preachy in a fantasy animated series. Longtime nerdy stuff fan Kevin Smith is the developer behind this and based on other projects that he has been involved in I think we will probably be pretty safe from the PC police getting involved.

If they do a good job with this there is going to be some pretty great merchandising opportunities methinks.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation drops on Netflix on July 23rd.
