How to do disappointing pizza - Bianca Review.

in #food9 years ago

If you ever wanted to see a handy list of Dos and Do Nots when you launch a business, look no further than Bianca, the brand new Adelaide pizza place that's making a name for itself.

Bianca is the brainchild of the same people who brought us Mlkman, the short-lived food delivery app that was quickly replaced by other similar services.

The concept is simple: good pizza, delivery only. By not allowing pickup or dine-in, online only ordering, the company shaves down operating costs and likely a lot of red tape.

So how does it stack up with any other pizza delivery place?

Bianca's main page. A really poorly designed website.

Launching on October 4th to great fanfare, i was eager to take advantage of their free pizza offer. Only.. I couldn't, because Bianca only had an iPhone app, and no website to order from. They would not take orders via Facebook with payment in cash, so I was out of luck.

Offers for $10 off and free delivery continued until October 10th, but I wasn't able to take advantage.

It wasn't until October 20th that I received an email to advise that Bianca now had a website. Finally! Time to try this five-star pizza!

Only, I couldn't. I entered my address, selected a pizza from the range available, and clicked to head to the next page - only to be returned to the start of the process. I reached out to the Facebook page and was advised it 'should be working' and to 'try again,' and lo, it suddenly worked. Only now, the coupon code didn't.

I was too hungry to wait, so had something else.

A few days had passed, and I decided to try again, only the coupon code didn't apply and I was told that I would be charged full price at checkout. I once again hit up the owners for some help, and was told it would apply on payment, if not before.

A sample of the delicious-looking pizzas on offer.

I took them on their word and placed the order, awaiting the option to 'Track your order all the way to your door.' Only there was no tracking, no confirmation, nothing. I reached out to them again, but got no answer - they had my money, after all.

To their credit, the pizza arrived about 20 minutes later, but the delivery guy had ignored the instructions I left in their 'delivery instructions' field, to text on arrival and I would meet him downstairs from my apartment.

Steps one, two, three, and four all seemed to encounter endless troubles

So, how does the pizza rate?

The base is very thin, and the application is watery - I'm reminded of the late night places and food trucks that do quick pizzas in some kind of giant microwave cooker, as opposed to actually oven cooked. The ingredients flop off before they can be eaten. The crust is chewy and doughy, not cooked all the way through.

What I bought and expected - the Tre Porcellini. Tomato, fior di latte, salame, sausage.

What I got - limp, meat-flavoured sadness

I also ordered cheesy garlic bread with it, and apparently $8 gets you four little 5"x5" squares of undercooked dough with cheese. I think garlic might have been in the room when it was made, but it wasn't on the actual bread.

So was it worth it? Not in the slightest. It was decent, but in no way worth the $33.95 (not including $10 discount) I paid. It wasn't worth the discounted price, either.

It seems to me that Bianca is a random thought that people decided to make happen, without being prepared to make it accessible or actually quality. I would have honestly preferred to order from Domino's or Pizza Hut, given what I received.

Two stars out of five. One for speed of delivery, one for the fact that the pizza wasn't too bad, only wet, limp, and disappointing.

Sort:

I'm interested to see what happens in this space. Dishme is growing in Sydney; where home chefs prepare and deliver meals without the benefit of a commercial kitchen.
I expect food delivery will be the next uber/airbnb decentralisation story, with restaurants missing out in a big way .

That no good mate!

They definetly don't make them like the old days...

I have though found a good egg so to speak in Pizza Chef on Salisbury Highway.

Seem to know what they are doing there from my previous experiences.

I still don't mind going into the shop for a pick up, miss the old customer service and a chat I guess.
