Cassava is a root crop propagated by it's stem. Each tuber is harvested between 12-24 months after planting. It serves as a very important staple food in Africa and in other parts of the world. It is a crop that has become indigenous to many societies of the world though it is believed to be a food crop introduced into west Africa many centuries ago via trade and other socio-economic interactions from the Americas.
Cassava is a crop rich in carbohydrates, at such , it is a very rich source of energy. It also contains a considerable amount of fibre. You an also get starch from cassava used for laundry purposes and clothe making and also the cassava peels is a useful source of feed for livestock.
Cassava if properly milled, it's flour can be used in bread making and the manufacture of other confectioneries. Cassava serves as a major food component in most families in sub Saharan Africa because it is cheaper to cultivate and easy to process into many food varieties.
Planting cassava is very easy , it can survive severe weather conditions and can tolerate any soil type except Sandy soil. Without cassava it will not be easy for the United Nations to combat food insecurity, now you can see that cassava is indeed a life saver.
