in #nigeria6 years ago

I went for a conference last month on Automated Teller Machine (ATM) here in Lagos @naijapidgin #wafrica
I was sponsored by my organisation.
The aim of the conference was security and the ATM, so one does not loose their hard earned money. I find it very interesting and i want to share what i learnt here so that everyone of us can be very cautious of our money.

An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is an electronic telecommunications device that enables customers of financial institutions to perform financial transactions, such as cash withdrawals, deposits, transfer funds, or obtaining account information, at any time and without the need for direct interaction with bank staff. The ATM card usually come with four digits pin or password but the owners will change the pin to a personal pin (just for him/her alone) for security reasons and all ATMs are built with cameras also for security reasons. the pins of the cards used to be the primary targets for hackers/thieves, with it, they can withdraw ones money easily at any where at anytime, in fact they can use it to shop online, they don't do this alone they have someone in house (in the bank) that also help with some other information. But now, they are more advanced than just pins, they are growing with the growth of technology. so one need to be very careful

Here are some of the tricks they use, so be very careful.

These days, they steal people's phones and they will dial 5650# irrespective of the phone or network from the phone, as far as the line is registered with bank, the victim's account's BVN (The Bank Verification Number commonly called BVN is a biometric identification system established by the Central Bank of Nigeria in alliance with Nigerian Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS) to curb or reduce illegal banking transactions in Nigeria. It is a modern security measure in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 1958 to reduce fraud in the U.S banking system. (https://www.ngbuzz.com/index.php?topic=2110.0)) will be sent as a text to the phone, and this BVN will be sent to their in-house crew and with this, an ATM will be created and the victim's money will be withdrawn easily and the craziest thing is that one will not be able to receive alerts or mail because it will be blocked by the banker who is working with them.
When one notice that ones phone is missing the first thing one should do is call call the customer care of their banks so that ones account can be deactivated temporarily, with this no transaction can be done on the account and if any transaction is carried out, the bank will be held responsible because one have reported the case.

Here is another trick they use,

If you are on an ATM queue and someone approach you (mostly by pregnant women, elderly or disabled persons) Do not help anyone to withdraw, instead refer them to the security, the security is in the best place to help.

this was an experienced shared at the conference about a young guy who was on a queue at an ATM stand, then an elderly woman approached him begging him to help her withdraw because she couldn't stand so long on the queue because of her age and all sort of things, so he willingly helped the woman then two days later, the guy was arrested in his house because he used an ATM belonging to someone who was robbed and killed in the process of the robbery. The camera installed on the ATM caught his face and he was traced to his house. Meanwhile, he was not the only one arrested for this case, the woman also went to different locations to catch some victims. The woman was later tracked down after a year or so, but victims have gone through hell within this time. So NEVER help anyone out in the ATM, instead, tell them to go to the security for help. You can walk into your bank if you have any issues with your ATM or you have more questions

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WITH HOW YOU HANDLE YOUR MONEY, PEOPLE'S MONEY AND ALSO HOW YOU HANDLE PEOPLE.
