Furi Review - hack and slash meets bullet hell!

What do you get when you combine tactical hack and slash action with a true bullet hell? Then you get Furi, a game that is quite challenging and a tad apart. This Furi review tells you whether you should start the fight with this game or stay far away from the title.

Because the game is a fight from the beginning to the end. In the positive sense. You are an unknown white-haired warrior who is chained in a futuristic prison. Why you sit there is unknown, but the jailer may not be clear very quickly.

You are belittled and tortured until a man with a rabbit mask suddenly freed you when the jailer is gone for a moment. And then it's your turn to take back the jailer. But the jailer is only the first one you have to level the ground. This fight is perhaps the first game of fighting the game, but is absolutely not an easy one.

Enough challenge for the bow

You must be very careful in this fight what happens on your screen, otherwise you are so dead. You get to endure it twofold in Furi. That someone physically attacks you causes hack and slash action and you end up in a bullet hell such as Sine Mora ex you who also provides.

Furi immediately feels inexcusable with a spicy boss fight. And that is only the first of the ten. With every boss fight the game becomes a lot harder.

Every boss requires a different tactic. One is very fast and leaves hardly any opening for an attack, while the other simply throws the arena full of bullets. If you do not pay attention, you can go and start that boss fight again.

The challenge is already quite high on the standard difficulty level, in which you do about five hours to complete the game. That is a reasonable time for an indie game of about 20 euros. But as soon as you raise the level a little, the game takes at least twice as long. The fights are a lot longer and on top of that they are all also a bit meaner.

Strongly tuned during fights...

In a game that is so challenging, it is important that the gameplay is also good. And that he. You can attack your enemies with your sword or bombard them from a distance with your gun. With both weapons you can perform a quick weak attack or hold the attack button for a powerful but slower attack.

You can also dodge and parry and you need these two skills very often. Everything reacts flawlessly when you want, with one exception. Only the fact that you are thwarted by the camera in some environments can sometimes frustrate you. The Game Bakers developer should have paid a little more attention to that element.

..but outside the fights you'll be bored to death

Another disadvantage of Furi is the part outside the fighting. The game consists of 80 percent boss battles, but during the remaining 20 percent, running is what the clock strikes. And that piece is very boring. The pieces between levels are linear, the tempo is painfully low and the story that the masked male tells you is anything but interesting.

There is really nothing to do except walk from A to B at the lowest pace you can think of. In the beginning you can still enjoy the variation in the worlds during these pieces. The one time you walk across islands in a field and at other times you enter a mechanical dome in which everything really moves.

The cell shaded style of Furi can best be compared to that of the Afro Samurai games. It looks sleek and occasionally a bit dreamy, but in the end the enjoyment is quick because there is nothing to do. If the pace here had been a little higher or there was something to do in the intermediate pieces, it would have been different, but now it is nothing more than a missed opportunity.

Conclusion

Furi does a lot of things, but is really a title with two faces. On the one hand, there are the challenging fights that offer variety and can drive you to the limit. Here comes the gameplay well to his right and is a title to feast.
On the other hand, the pieces between the battles get bored. And that greatly reduces the quality of the game. A sword usually cuts on two sides, but unfortunately there is a side bone in this case.

➕ Fights are nice and challenging
➕ Great mix of bullet hell and hack and slash
➕ Gameplay is wonderfully smooth during fights

➖ Camera mode sometimes works against
➖ Between the fights by particularly boring
➖ Is a bit on the short side
