SHOULD YOU USE HOME ADVISOR SERVICES?

in #homestead9 years ago

We recently went through some extensive remodeling in a few areas in the house. There were many leads on various contractors. We settled on Home Advisor services hoping for great professional work.

The following is my experience. This post is meant to reflect only that.
The suggested contractor came, did the assessment and sent an estimate. I signed the contract without haggling as for certain things you want the job done right regardless of the cost. The contractors were expensive. Work began. A lot of demolition and then rebuilding. There was also an addition to be built.
The addition had been built and the roof was in place and it rained one evening. Water poured into the house. I had to climb up and put tarps etc to stem the tide, literally. The contractor looked at his horrible work and started making up insane excuses. He attempted to fix the leak x 3. At this point we consulted a roofing company that came and showed us all the issues. There were many. No guidelines were met. Material was too thin. Flashing was done improperly. We had to hire the roofing company. When they took the roof off, we found out that only the edges were melted on not the whole roof. Anyways, that was a 5000 dollar loss.

The backsplash for the kitchen sink tile had to be redone x 3 due to errors. ( excuse the counter mess).

The kitchen cabinets are KRAFTMAID and I love them. Here one corner. They scratched and dented the new cabinets.

The flooring was replaced. It is a Bamboo floor. When said they were done we found large gaps near appliances and corners. That had to be fixed.

The wood block around the stove took 6 weeks or a bit longer to manufacture and install. That was not the contractor's fault but added to the aggravation. Yesterday after a while, I had my first home cooked meal.

Finally put down the hand made rug from the caucuses regions of Armenia/Pakistan. It is a Kazak rug.

Here is the pattern of the rug. It has been a bit longer than 2 months. I am tired, stressed and fatigued but I am finally done.
Next stop is to fix the irrigation system that my lawn guy broke. Maybe in 10 years.

So if you still want to go through Home Advisors, be my guest. It was many many extra days and a a few thousands of lost dollars.

Ouch that hurts! Did they have letters of recommendations on their works?

Apparently they do but you know how contractors are. They bring in new guys all the time. One bad lemon spoils it all.
