Give Honor to Whom is Due

Romans 13:7;Give therefore to all their due, taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs are due, fear to whom fear is due and honor to whom honor is due. 1 Timothy 5:17; Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double-honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.

Today Paul draws our attention to something which of great impact and significance in the ministry which unfortunately lots of people do not really consider it as they should. First and foremost we are being admonish to give honor to whom honor is due, now without going to the second verse yet, we would share an accord that the elderly in every community deserve respect and honor and ought to be treated as such, even without going into the scriptures our society has seen and understand the importance and the need to honor our elders, in the second verse emphasis is being put on our elders who are in Christ, who are in the ministry of Christ teachings, these people are worthy of double rewarded, take note however that the verse also says the elders that rule well, what this means is that there are elders who do not rule well, elders who are bad mentors and examples to us and the younger generation.

So what do we have to do, we would not want to be bad elders that our kids cannot live up to? So do what is right now, we learn the Word of God now that we may teach the younger generation. We honor our elders now that we may be honored in the future. Again, we have to know and understand that when Timothy talked about elders he was not only referring to people who have advanced in age, he was also referring to people in the ministry occupying higher positions to ensure the ministry runs and the gospel in taken far. These people are also elders in the ministry and must be accorded the due honor irrespective of their age. It is my fervent hope and prayer that the good Lord will teach us aright that we may do what is expected of us.
