in Steem Ghana4 years ago

Greetings guys,

Perhaps hit the gym, get some workouts or try out new things on the blockchain, whichever it may be for you I do hope you have a great weekend.

So as usual I am here to discuss some health issues or concerns with you and for our lesson for today I want us to look at contact lenses, what they are, and how best we can make good use of them as individuals without compromising on our ocular health in ways that would be detrimental to us. I do hope you enjoy the read.

Contact Lenses

These plastic materials made up of different types of components of plastic that give it is its varying properties allowing it to be worked out in ways that make it possible to be placed on the eye. The properties of contact lenses are such that they can allow air or oxygen for the benefit of the eye because it is placed on the eye.

Contact lenses are both for fashion and vision purposes although it is almost becoming the order of the day for a lot of ladies to be wearing them for its aesthetic purposes, changing their iris color to suit perhaps their sense of fashion or dress color, etc. Aside from this, however, your spectacle correction can be replaced with contact lenses should it fit the necessary parameters and the need for which your doctor may recommend it.

Your Doctor may opt that you go with contact lenses if you happen to be an athlete and needs to compete in a competition or something of that sort. This would help make your work easier to execute with the worry or stress of feeling the whole frame when you have to run, it may even fall with all that force. This is not the only work though many individuals depending on their work type may have their ODs prescribing contact lenses for them.

However, it must be noted that not all individuals can wear contact lenses and so if you do happen to want one and your OD says it wouldn't do you good then please heed his or her advice. People with very high correction power for their refractive errors cannot wear contact lenses because they wouldn't fit. Individuals with corneal health issues shouldn't wear contact lenses because already it reduces the availability of oxygen to the eye, it could just get worse for you.

Guidelines for Contact Lens Wearers

Wearing a contact lens should come with extra care or caution because doing the wrong thing might just introduce directly to the eye which could get very catastrophic very quickly and then things could get bad fast. Not taking care of your contact lens wear could result in Keratitis caused by bacteria, fungus, viruses, and even protozoan, the latter of which can be very difficult to treat and could even result in blindness.

And so here are some tips for patients out there who are on contact lens wear;

  • Please do not sleep in your Contact Lens

This is a very important rule to follow especially for those who may be wearing the type known as rigid gas permeable. Your contact lens, should you sleep in can easily get lodge at a point it out not to be and give you a lot of disturbance or even pain. It also means you do not get to disinfect it and can be a source of pathogen introduction to the eye. Sleeping with your contact lens is a no-no.

  • Disinfect it after usage and always keep a clean hand with usage

For those whose contact lenses may not be the daily disposable meaning they get to reuse it over and over, please do well to disinfect it always after every usage and always use a fresh supply of your contact lens solution for that. Failure to do this may breed acanthamoeba in your solution.

Again, always make sure that your hands are clean whenever you have to touch your contact lens whether it means taking it off or putting it on, whatever the case may be, always wash your hands with soap before usage and wipe with a clean tissue or air dry them.

  • Have regular checkups and discontinue usage if any anomalies spring up

It is important that contact lenses wearers check out with their ODs regularly, especially with every refill of their daily wear. It is equally important that as a contact lens wearer you discontinue usage immediately you notice anything anomalies with your eye.

For example, you notice redness, pain, discharges, foreign body sensation on the eye, etc. After you discontinue you go for a review from your physician to be able to get things sorted out and under control as soon as possible.

Conclusion

It is important to know that contact lens wearing is a very safe thing to do however if not done right could be detrimental to your ocular health. And so when in doubt please do not consult the internet, rather consult your physician for proper care and assessment. Your health is your wealth, always do your best with yourself. I hope you learned a thing or two from today's lesson.
