Flora and Fauna in Thailand - A garden full of Flowers!

in #homesteading5 years ago (edited)

Living in a tropical climate, most of the plants and flowers that I see here are new to me and, not speaking Thai, I don't know their names. What I do know, however, is that there are some very beautiful varieties so I've been taking a few photos both here in Bangkok and back in Koh Samui.

These first two pictures are of the Thai National Flower, Ratchaphruek. It is common all over Thailand but to be honest, I'd barely noticed it before but in Samui this week it was in full bloom everywhere. The important thing is it's yellow which is the colour of Monday and that's the day both the current King and his late father were born and so it is very important. Yellow flags can be seen flying everywhere in Thailand.

There was a lot of Ratchaphruek planted in homage King Rama IX when he passed away a couple of years ago and now it looks as though it is growing everywhere. It really lit-up the lanes and backroads of Samui!

This next photo is Leelawadee which again is very common all over Thailand and has many close relatives all over the world. It grows on 'The flowering trees of Thailand' and is mainly white. In full bloom these trees almost match the famous Japanese blossom trees for beauty. The flowers are mainly white, the colour of Buddhism but can also come in other varieties. Sadly its almost the end of the season for these with just a few flowers left clinging on to the branches. We have a couple of these trees in the jungle garden!

These next few photos I haven't quite worked out what they are despite the Mother-in-law telling me the Thai names for them, but obviously, they're very colourful. These are also in the back garden and anyway, looking at pictures is much better than reading my waffle!

There will be a small prize if anyone can tell me what that upside-down basket thingy is for!!

That's it for now but next time I will show you some more pictures of the variety of fruit that we have growing in the garden. This trip was a little early for too much harvesting but it looks as if it's going to be a great year for fruit!

I love the profusion of the flowers and the sense of space! I think that upside down basket thing is some sort of fish or lobster trap.

It is so colourful down there almost year-round. Koh Samui is a holiday Island but its big enough for that not to spoil its natural beauty and rural feel. We are only 100m from the main ring road and 5km from the small non-tourist town where the boats arrive so we have the best of both worlds. The main tourist areas are quite compact but busy and luckily, the planning laws on Samui are strict, and more importantly, actually enforced so there is no high rise at all, there are a couple of international hotels at 5 storeys back from the road and away from the coast but other than that, nothing over 3 storeys is allowed so it retains a rustic feel. At 8 pm, around us, it's so quiet and still and feels like midnight anywhere else which isn't really great for this night owl! The in-laws go to bed at 8 and are up at 5 am...nightmare!
The main difference though is the air. Bangkok and the suburbs have terrible pollution and when you get down here, the difference is immediately noticeable.
The basket is for keeping the Cock under! All over Thailand, people keep Cocks for show, formerly for fighting but especially here in Thailand, happily, there isn't much cockfighting anymore apart from in the rural North-east. Cockfighting is still huge in The Philippines for instance where its still prime-time TV viewing.

I wish you'd post on actifit or a Sports related post, my upvote there is still worth about 3 Steem!!

Will try to use the other account to upvote and I think you will still get the tokens anyway I hope. Keep checking into Steem-Engine to see what you get!

I seem to be getting waterfalls of coins!

I post on @actifit using @brownsvillegirl, although I think my phone battery needs replacing, it keeps draining in no time! We went to the coast on Saturday and walked miles but the phone packed up after a couple of hours.
I could tell with the basket it involved animals :)
This is where you have some land?

Yes, this is ours. It's about 3 acres split into 2. The wife's sister built on their plot a few years ago and the in laws live in their house while they are in Scotland but father in law struggles to keep up with it a little so we need to go down there regularly and do a little work too. I say we.......;-)
Fon just plants more stuff!
