What is Slicethepie?

Slicethepie was launched in 2007 by David Courtier-Dutton as an interactive and fun website to identify the best up and coming artists, whilst getting a paid incentive to do so. They have evolved into becoming the largest online music reviewing platform and in the past couple of years have expanded into other categories such as mobile phone accessories and adverts. Slicethepie boasts over 2 million reviewers and guarantees to pay in real money via PayPal.

How does it work?

The Slicethepie economic model revolves around the fact that companies require a lot of constructive feedback on their particular product, and that this data is a valuable asset. A musician, advertising company, mobile phone accessory maker, or any other type of business that they deal with, will pay Slicethepie to host their product on the website, and a proportion of that will go to the reviewer based on their contributions.

After signing up, you are to pick a topic you would like to review (this can be changed at any time) and you can proceed to do so. Taking music as an example, you are instructed to listen to the song and then comment on what you think about it, in reference to things like the instruments, vocals and how it made you feel etcetera. You then have to rate the song out of 10 and rate the subsequent categories such as whether you thought it sounded happy, funky, sad, angry and many others.

Once your review has been submitted (this should take you no longer than 5-10 minutes) you are given your pay contribution and this can be increased or decreased based on your star rating. As you continue to develop as a reviewer, your star rating will grow and you will benefit from the associated pay increase.

What’s the interface like?

As you can see from the image above, the website has a clean and easy to use interface. I have had no problems navigating around their website.

Is it worth my time?

It really depends on your circumstances and enthusiasm for reviewing content in your spare time. One of the main caveats of this website is that you only get approximately $0.01-$0.10 per review, and you cannot withdraw any funds until you have accumulated $10. Per hour this website is certainly not a good pay by any means, but if you are in a developing country or you genuinely find reviewing things enjoyable, then I would recommend this website to you. I personally have used it in the past and will do a song review from time to time for fun, but it is by no means a stable source of income for myself.
