Our hugelkultur bed
I almost forgot to post a pic of our new hugelkultur bed! I haven't officially measured it yet, but it's close to 4x20 feet. That should increase our growing area by about 30%. I'll do the official measuring and math on it later.
Now, what to do next? Am I supposed to water it, or will that come with the rain? I'm thinking we'll plant a cover crop of heat tolerant clover for some nitrogen fixation in the massive underground carbon deposit. Also, what the heck is carbon sequestration, cause I read that hugelkultur does it and wanna find out what it means. Quick! To the google! Now that I learned how and where to put it and how it works, I get to learn how to use it!
Yeah, there's a few sticks popping up out of it. Not sure if that's gonna be detrimental. We'll see. Once I realized what was going on, I rearranged and repacked the stack from that point on, but there was no changing that spot without digging up and cutting off that part of the big log. Maybe it'll make a cool little trellis for something.
All in all, I'm uber proud of it and am already looking to make another. I'm excited with all the progress we made on our little aspiring homestead on this long weekend! It's awesome what a few extra days off work can do.
I know I already posted this picture of Sam, but it's my recent favorite, so I'm showing it off again.
Hope y'all are having a productive weekend too, what are your plans for the rest of it?
Thanks for reading :) stay relevant
Nate
Awesome job! I have yet to build mine, and I have plenty of logs from when I had some trees cut down. :(
But once I get some good soil (all mine is sand) I'll get it started!
I put this one in the sandiest part of our yard. It dries out really fast over there, so I figured the water storage capacity of the hugel would help during the 9 month Texas dry season.
haha! great job sir nateonsteemit and great photo of Sam! I can see why that's a favorite. I figured people would come on here and give more knowledge about the bed but they must think it's a weekend or something!
