Work from Home Job Ideas
Many traditional work from home businesses are sales-based. Most of these have required either door-to-door sales or home demonstration parties, but a newer business model has emerged with the internet. Some at-home sales reps are now doing most of their selling and advertising online using webpages, facebook groups and the like, instead of relying on face-to-face sales. Popular niches include cosmetics companies such as Avon, Mary Kay, and Mark; home goods like Pampered Chef, Tupperware, and Princess House, and health or weight loss products like Shaklee, Herbalife, and Body by Vi. These are espcially attractive to stay-at-home parents and students who may need a job to bring in extra income but might not have the time to work a traditional office job.
Rather than re-selling or distributing products made by others, other people are making and selling their own items. This can be anything from crafts, jewelry, or baked goods to things as complicated as custom-built furniture, play equipment, or computer systems. Gift baskets are an especially popular item to make and sale from home, as are diaper cakes made for baby showers. Other people have made a home business out of framing pictures and art, scrapbooking, or refinishing furniture. Sewing is another popular craft business, either doing alterations, sewing wedding dresses or other custom clothing and costumes, or sewing clothing and accessories to sell. Any of these can be sold directly from home with a sign out front and advertising around town, at local flea markets and similar community sales, and through online sites like craigslist, ebay, and etsy.
Still others are making a living from home using their skills to provide services to others. Home daycares, pet sitters, and dog walkers are common examples of this, as are home based tax preparation and accounting services. Other people hire themselves out as graphic designers or web designers, working from home to design and deliver projects for their clients. Others do bookkeeping or direct mail from home. In the real estate niches, there are full-service providers who work from home to design real estate flyers, deliver them to the boxes they go in on various properties, and sometimes even put up and take down the real estate signs themselves, at the request of an agent or broker. If you can think of any service a business or person may need and find a way to save them time or money by delivering it, then you have the potential for turning it into a home based business.
Telecommuting is another common choice for a home based business. While it is becoming more common for people to telecommute as part of a traditional job, it has long been the basis of many work-at-home jobs. Telemarketing is very common - working from home to call potential clients and customers off a list and solicit orders or appointments. Support and customer service calls are also commonly made from homey independent contractors. For most of these jobs, you need a dedicated phone line to make calls on, and possibly to receive incoming calls, and a reliable high-speed internet connection to enter orders and information into the company computer system. Many of these jobs have been outsources to overseas call centers in the past few years, but there are still plenty available, especially to applicants with customer service or sales experience. There are many other types of phone jobs that work in similar ways, from working as a telephone psychic to a chat line operator.
While those were some of the more traditional work from home jobs, the internet has revolutionized the home based business world. The most common ways of making money online are by selling either a real or virtual good or service online, selling ebooks and other information, by monetizing a blog or webpage and making money from ad and affiliate sales and AdSense revenue.
eCommerce, or online sales, can be a great way of making money. On a larger scale, many companies now sale primarily online and their main business consists of promoting their website and taking orders for their products through it. That can be very expensive, but there are some products that an individual can sell as well. Many of these are virtual. If you are into gaming or virtual worlds such as Second Life, you've probably seen examples of this. Items can be designed in sold in-game for virtual currency and then converted to real-world money.
The web as all about information, and information sales is hot. One of the most lucrative ways of doing this right now is eBooks. Write a book or 20, set up some sites marketing it, maybe list it on ebay, and profit. There are some people making quite a nice income on $20 guide books or 99 cent stories for sale on Kindle. Many people also package this information, either eBooks or public-domain content, as a file or CD and sell on ebay or other marketplaces. If you are good at writing or research, you can get paid directly by writing for a content site like Textbroker, iWriter, or Demand Studios and being paid up front, or by publishing on HubPages or Suite 101 and earning residual income based on the clicks and ad traffic your articles draw.
Blogs are another good way to earn money from home. Many people blog for free, but a few ads in the sidebars or linked to the text and an AdSense widget can provide a nice bit of extra money. This may not be the best choice if you need a job right this instant, but it can build a steady income stream over time. For up-front earnings, you can sign up with sites like PayPerPost and Blogsvertise and get paid directly by advertisers to write articles linking to their sites, or you can sell ad spaces. Just don't clutter the blog with so much paid content that you turn subscribers away. You can also sign up for affiliate programs with Amazon and other retailers where you earn money based off purchases through links on your site. You can do this through ads or links within your posts when talking about items you used or have purchased.
With a little bit of creativity and hard work, it is possible to earn as much or more money with a home based business than as an employee of another. You'll need to save up money for taxes, insurance, and similar things, but the rewards of being your own boss are worth it and it's great to be your own boss and to know that you are limited only by your own potential.

These are some very useful tips, thanks you for sharing them with us!
I'm thinking of trying some of these. I love baking and such, but I'm a bit hesitant to start selling, because I'm not sure what all the regulations are for selling food. This is something I have to read up on. Gift baskets is a nice idea aswell!
I already put up my photos for sale, but nothing really happens there. I guess it's a marketing thing.
You have to learn a little bit. Then you will succeed! It's not as difficult as it seems. Thank you for your comment!
