Batik Star Wars shirt
I made this Star Wars BB8 batik shirt 2 years ago after the movie was released.
My kids were so excited about the new release of sequel back then. I also loved particulary this droid design, so I thought of making a shirt with BB8.
The best thing about batik is that you can come up with the design. And in my case, I could sew them into shirts for my son. I thought he would like it.
So I browsed some BB8 images from internet, then drew it on my sketch pad. I measured the length of front side of the shirt, and made the sketch just fit at the lower part of it.
And few more motifs that I had in mind was something that resembles the sand dune scene from the movie....
something like a little wind blowing at sand dune...
So for the motif I looked for was a cloud motif. Originally from Buddism and China I believe, it also came to Japan together with the religion so it is not uncommon motif to see.
I also made Star Wars logo to be placed on the sleeve.
Then I used one of my son's collared shirt to copy the pattern, and measured how much fabric was needed.
After I transfered the sketch to the cotton fabric, took it to the batik workshop. Yes, I am learning to do batik from master, I am greatful that his workshop is only 30 minutes drive from my home.
First I did canting. Canting is a technique of drawing a line with melted wax using a special tool. So I did it over where I drew line.
Next step was to apply pigments dissolved in water. Yes, it is like watercolor painting using brush.
The motifs and BB8 needed to be colored first to see any weak wax lines. Then after that, I made mustard color for the background because I wanted it to be sand dune:)
Well...thing is.... as you could see my son didn't like it . Very disappointing, but after 2 years in his closet, my husband and I were going to see our friend at his house. My friend and his wife have a toddler son, so we brought as a gift when we visit them. And they were very happy and it made me happy too.
The image I uploaded here is my own, as well as the artwork.
