Chapter One:The Complete Marriage

Numerous couples fall in love, get married and assume that with that they have finished the conjugal task. They tend to think that everything else will work automatically. but that belief is far from being true. A successful marriage does not occur spontaneously or randomly. On the other hand, conjugal happiness occurs when the husband and wife dedicate themselves to lovingly and comprehensively resolving both small and great difficulties.

The philosopher was accustomed to use the illustration of a ladder to represent the growth that should occur in the marriage relationship. the two vertical sides of the staircase represent the husband and the wife, and each of the steps represents something that attracts them and holds them together in an inseparable companionship. the first step is physical attraction and the last is pure love of God. each one of the steps depends on the others, with which all acquire importance in the maintenance of the unit of the staircase of the complete marriage.

Someone defined marriage as: the complete dedication of the total person to achieve a complete lifestyle. This definition assumes that a couple will fight to achieve the objectives that had been proposed by joining in marriage. Marrying for convenience, to escape an unpleasant family situation, or to give a name to a child, is not an appropriate goal for a successful marriage. and they will be one flesh (Genesis 2:24). This biblical passage expresses with words that are as old as the human race itself, the highest goal of marriage is a union of love that embraces all spheres of life: physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.
