Dragon Ball Super does a fantastic job of explaining how time travel would actually work. You would only be traveling to an alternate reality that was set at a different point in time from our perspective. Their Now would be our yesterday or tomorrow...

It's really good stuff and I suggest watching this entire episode along with the old Trunks arc from DBZ... It also hints at the fact that the mutliverse was not intended to be the way of the universe but due to the time rings keeping things from changing to prevent paradoxes that the time stream had to split into multiple worlds, ie, the multiverse.
Not a bad analogy to what is going on in reality, and I love it when pop culture reflects the inner workings of the human subconscious because these are thoughts that are drifting around there and these authors/shows are just latching on to them...
I highly recommend watching the Goku Black arc from DBS and the Trunks/Android/Cell arc from DBZ as it is both highly entertaining and actually explains this stuff mostly correctly... It brings you a good way there to proper understanding that is... It brings you to the front steps of the omniverse and almost to the fractalverse and walks you through the multiverse and timelines constructs/ideas...
These constructs are also easily digitized and made into a system if done proper as the NanoCheeZe MEQUAVIS project aims to do eventually...
