Tokyo Story (1953) - Lets talk film / Isn't life depressing?
"Tokyo Story" is a Japanese film that shows the Japanese culture and livelihood to it most intricate details. This is a story of an aged couple who visit Tokyo in their last few years of their lives to see their children. Their children will be all grown up and will be having their own family. "Tokyo Story" is a movie about the relationship between children and parents and how it changes after the children become adults and they get married.
A parent will spend all his time looking after the children and making sure that he or she grows up to be successful. But, when they grow up the children forgets about what their parents went through for their well being. This movie also portrays the same. When the old couples goes to visit their sons and daughters in Tokyo, their children won't be having anytime in their hands to spend it with their parents. They both will be sent from one of the children's home to another as if they both were a burden to them.
Even though the old couples knew what their children were doing wrong they both will be happily going with the flow and they won't be worrying about anything. This shows that any mistake done by the children is not a mistake in the eyes of parents. Instead, they both will be blaming themselves for not teaching their children properly.
The movie is directed by Yasujirô Ozu and this film is known for its cinematography. The scenes are blocked in such a way to give as much emotions possible for the scene. There is no camera movement, a frame is set and actors are made to act inside that particular frame. This makes the shots very rigid and also it feels like the audience is acting like a third person watching the movie. This is necessary because the important part of this film is not to make the audience relate to the characters, but to make sure that audience don't behave like the characters in real life.
In one of the scenes the old man who will be having a reunion with his friends in Tokyo. They will be getting drunk and they will be talking about their children. His friends will be praising him for his upbringing of his children, because of his children are doing really well in their lives. But, the old man knows that even after all the success their children didn't have time to spend with parents. I really like this scene, because the emotions are not expressed verbally but by using subtexts. Which makes the scene more powerful.
