Hello community,

As citizens of a country we have the right to vote and the right to speak about the elections in our country. Each country has its own way of conducting elections. Here this week we have the opportunity to share our ideas about the elections in our country.

👉🏾What do you think about Elections in your country:

As a democratic socialist republic, we have many rights for elections. According to the constitution of our country every 4 years we have two elections, one presidential election, and one parliamentary election. All those who have completed 18 years old can apply to vote.

We get a paper including our names announcing that we are eligible to vote. The voting centers are there we can go and vote. NIC is the needed document to express the voting. One finger is colored with a permanent marker to mark that no voting repetitions are happening.

Before each election, the electing parties publish a set of work that is scheduled to do after they came to power. The citizens are needed to look back and analyze whether they have done the so called promises or not. If citizens just go and vote it makes a big mistake for the future generations.

The people who are elected should also have some educational qualifications, wealth and status to elect in our country. This is the place that I disagree as the most qualified people are not selected but the old people are selected by the commissions.

👉🏾What do you think about the electoral system in your country? How is it done in your country? Is it transparent and fair in your country?

I will answer all these questions as a whole. The electoral system in Srilanka is not in satisfactory status. The candidates are not taken by filtering from special proper parameters. First, there should be a clear and transparent parameter to register the candidates to elect.

One or two weeks before the election the citizens get the voting slips and the rules for the election are announced. Then we have to check where our voting places it. In a city or village depending on the population, there are several election places with particular center numbers.

The election time is from 6.30 am in the morning until 4.00 pm in the evening. After 4.00 pm the election centers close and the boxes are taken to Colombo main branch. The counting starts afterward, by the following day morning the winning party is announced.

In my country the election process is transparent but there are underhand things going on in between the elections so citizens are even unaware of the result until the end. The election process can be done in a more transparent way by giving good criteria for the candidates and the selection process as well. The law should be above all. Then equality will enforce.

👉🏾Assume there's no fairness and effectiveness as far as elections are concerned, what solutions can you propose to ensure it's being carried out the right way

The candidates should be given proper selection criteria. The candidates who represent the provinces or the country should be well educated and well known to the particular social spectrum in order to raise their voice to develop the city or the village.

The existing politicians when re-applying concur with the power and try to create a violent environment. Everyone should be equal before the law. These should be put into debate in the parliament and approved by the constitution.

Some politicians don't do their promised work after coming into their positions. So there should be a proper legal system that they should do whatever they promised before coming into power or if not there should be legal actions taken as a result of cheating the citizens.

Nice presentation and well shared views.
I also feel that strengthening our institutions would go along way in upholding the laws of the land. Politicians ate quick in looking out for loopholes to undermine the process either directly or indirectly.
Best of luck, friend

Thank you friend

You are welcome.

I believe that transparency can be brought to governance with the use of blockchain. If blockchain is used in elections to keep results and transmit results, it would be fair to a reasonable extent in so many countries.

Thank you for the ideas friend
