ISLAND ELEPHANT REVIEW

in #teatro7 years ago

There comes a time when the parents disappear, the older brothers leave home, and the children must hurry to leave before something else happens and they get stuck in Elephant Island, the northernmost place in Antarctica and also the most icy. This is the journey of the last 5 children on the island, accompanied by a seemingly invisible mouse, which claims there is beyond Elephant Island, a place called Kokkola, where the sun rises every day and seagulls fly through the skies. Maybe they can grow on the other side of the sea, in that place. It will be worth trying.

Castillo's vision of direction constructs a scenic paradox inspired by the aesthetics of Tim Burton and Wes Anderson, under a text that releases important decisions about an idea of growing, of maturing, of forming an idea of life. The author delves into important issues for young audiences: gender identity, social tolerance ... perhaps at a risky pace, but which is efficient and convincing.

Perhaps the only thing that is distracting and a little in discordance with the rest of the stage proposal, is the tone with which Castillo directs his talented cast. A kind of realistic farce that, although in some characters works completely, given the characteristics of its actors such as corporality and voice, in others it simply becomes unnecessary and to some extent shocking. Which could take the work to an unnecessary port.
