Missing Review - AMD Radeon Vega 64 & 56

AMD acquired NVIDIA's rival company ATI, but for the time being it loses GPU competition. According to Jon Peddie Research, a consulting firm, NVIDIA accounted for over 70% of the video card share by the end of 2016.

However, this time, the Vega series announced by AMD was developed with the aim of recapturing the share of NVIDIA's high-end video card, GTX 1080. However, attention, when Vega was announced at CES was not that high. AMD did not attract people like NVIDIA announced that they spent billions of yen on the latest GPU development.

After eight months, the Vega series came as promised. Vega 64 is priced at $ 500 and Vega 56 of the lower model is priced at $ 400. Both of them have 8 GB of memory, and the big difference between them is the number of computing units (something like the core in the CPU). We have 64 ~ Vega 64 and 56 ~ Vega 56.

Even comparing the Vega series and the GTX 1080, there was no difference as expected, and in some circumstances, Vega 64 was faster than 1080. If you compare by car, Honda's Civic and Toyota's Corolla. Both are about the same price.

I was really surprised at the performance of Vega 56. Despite being quite cheaper than 64 and 1080, the behavior of "overwatch" and "civilization VI" was of a slightly slower extent. When you play "Overwatch" at the highest image quality, fps (number of frames per second) is 112, 64 at 1080, 114, 56 at 99, and an incredible result. As for "Civilization VI", the difference shrinks even further, and only changes to 1,080 or 64 and 1.5 frames.

With this Blender processing speed, 56 was faster than 1080! The frame that took 9 minutes 34 seconds at 1080 was 9 minutes 28 seconds at 64 and 9 minutes 29 seconds at 56. There is no reason to buy 1080 or 64 instead of 56 dare?

Nonetheless, GPUs and cars do not judge speed only. As much as a fast car it's a bad fuel economy, it's a thought, and the GPU is the same. While 1080 operates at 180 W, it requires 210 W for 56 and 295 W for 64. As a result, 1080 has one 8-pin connector, whereas Vega needs both in.

The Vega series used multiple software to solve this power supply problem. The first, most noteworthy software is Radeon Chill ! Radeon Chill is a function to adjust the frame rate according to the motion. In other words, when the player does not operate it, it reduces the frame rate, improves power efficiency and reduces the temperature. Radeon Chill also has a function to adjust the upper and lower limits of fps. There are other power saving modes that reduce the power consumption to 150 W and countermeasures such as FRTC (frame rate / target control) that limits fps.
