Two weeks - Two losses

Sometimes, when it rains it pours, and it seems to be pouring like Hurricane Harvey here on the homestead. In the last two weeks we lost 2 animals. It has been tuff, but we are learning to move forward in these tuff times. I am still hoping to shoot an animal to put in the freezer, but I have been dealing with accidental or forced losses so much, I have not had time to do any hunting.

Thank you for watching.

that's why I raised goats instead of cows.
loose a goat it's no big deal
loose a cow or a calf and it IS a big deal.

We have sheep as well. I did goats...hated goats. I have friends who want me to write a book about going from the big city to the wilderness trying to homestead...I told them that I would have a chapter 6.66 - "Why all goats go to hell". I do notice a huge difference between goats and sheep, and perhaps, if I lived in an area where I could build better fencing I might like goats, but my hill is steep with a lot of dips, and it is very difficult to keep them out of our garden. We got out of them about 3 years ago.

This is so sad. Two deaths and the loss of a calf represents a significant loss. Was the cow found close to your house? This being hunting season I would be worried about new hunters especially taking shots in excitement and hitting something that wasn't the intended target.

We have an 80 acre summer lease for the cattle. One side of the property is a road, the other is a river. The two neighbors are a long ways off from where she was found. I have no doubt somebody shot her, but with a .22.

Do you get outside hunters coming to hunt the lands around you? On our homestead we had a fairly large wood lot and hunters for the city would come and ask permission to hunt. Others just trespassed and it became a dangerous situation if some of these guys coming within 100 yards of the house. Some people are responsible hunters. Others not so.

I'm sure they do. This property is about 15 minutes from the homestead.

How close do you have to get to kill a cow with at .22? And why would someone do that on purpose??

Sorry for your loss :(

Try to keep your chin up.

Good to see you're composting the horse.

I've composted a mule and it works fairly well.
