Is Australia an Island?

World-Data-Locator-Map-Australia.jpg

World Information Finder Guide: Australia

Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.

At around 3 million square miles (7.7 million square km), Australia is the littlest landmass on Earth. Truth be told, it's nearer in size to Greenland than it is to South America. Does that make Australia an island like Greenland?

In spite of the fact that Australia is in some cases called an "island mainland," most geographers believe islands and landmasses to be isolated things. As indicated by Britannica, an island is a mass of land that is both "altogether encompassed by water" and furthermore "more modest than a landmass." By that definition, Australia can't be an island since it's now a mainland.

New Zealand. Political/Actual guide. Incorporates finder.

Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.

The guide is covered with place names that are gotten from more seasoned spot names. New Brunswick. New Hampshire. New Orleans. The demonstration of taking an area from a wayfarer's nation of beginning, prefixing it with "New," and doling out it to a spot that hardly takes after its namesake ("Old" Jersey is a scantily populated Channel Island known fundamentally for its dairy steers) is essentially its own section in the how-to manual for Western imperialism. Because of the globe-crossing business reach of the Dutch East India Organization, place names that have their beginnings in the Netherlands spring up with astounding consistency. Dutch voyagers and pilgrim authorities were answerable for New Netherland (presently New York), New Amsterdam (presently New York City), and New Haarlem (presently Harlem). The English would guarantee that those names would be mostly recalled in melody, if by any means ("Even old New York was once New Amsterdam..."), and despite the fact that they supplanted the Dutch-named New Holland with Australia, New Zealand held its Dutch starting points.
