Glitter Eye Makeup Ideas for Evenings Out

Glitter eye #makeup is a girl’s best friend. Ideal for dressing up anything from a casual daytime look to a glamorous evening out appearance, glittery eye makeup is a great way to change up your routine and add some extra sparkle to your outfit.

If you’ve ever wanted to use glitter eye makeup, but aren’t sure how, here’s your guide to fast, fun looks that make your eyes pop.

What is Glitter Eye Makeup?

Glittery eye makeup comes in a wide assortment of sizes, colours, and styles. While some offers only a gentle shimmer, other options offer large sparkles that can really offset your eyes and light up the area. While many people assume that glitter eye makeup is restricted to eyeshadow, it’s also possible to find eyeliner and mascara that has glitter in it, too.

How to Apply Glitter Eye Makeup: The Smoky Eye Look

The great thing about glitter eye makeup is that it can be manipulated to suit your purposes. Whether you just want a bit of glitter for an evening out or a lot of impact for a big event, glitter eye makeup is flexible enough to do it all.

Here are a few smart ways to use glitter eye makeup for your next look, starting with a smoky eye base.

The smoky eye is a fantastic base for lots of other looks, especially the glittery eye look. The reason for this is simple: in addition to the fact that the smoky eye provides a base for the glitter products to stick to, it’s also a great way to add some extra drama to the look.

To get the smoky eye glitter look, follow these tips:

Apply Primer

No matter how you’re going to build your smoky eye look, primer is an essential first step. In addition to helping makeup stick to your eye, primer also provides a smooth surface for additional products to adhere to, and it can prevent creasing and running throughout the day.

Start with a bit of primer and allow it to dry completely before applying any other products. You can swipe the product on with your finger for a smooth look. You may also choose to add some foundation or concealer to the lid to provide a base shade.

Add the Base Shadow

The next step in the smoky eye look is to apply the base shadow. Generally, this will be a gray or black base, although you’re free to work with whatever colour you want to build the appearance you’d like.

Generally, a charcoal gray shadow will work well, and will complement the appearance of any glitter you add later. Using a small shadow brush, swipe the colour across the lid and into the crease.

Add the Glitter

Next, swipe the glitter across the upper lid. How you do this will depend on which type of glitter you choose to use. For example, if you’re using a loose glitter, you’ll simply want to use a small brush to add it to the lid and crease. Feel free to swipe the glitter up toward your brow for more drama. Apply the glitter so that it covers the base shadow completely.

Finish with Mascara

Once you’ve added the glitter to your lid, finish the look with some mascara. In addition to darkening any shadow that was accidentally dropped on your lashes, mascara also adds some drama to the shade and makes your eyes pop.

Once you’ve added the mascara, use a clean brush to brush away any spilled shadow or dust.

The Glitter Eyeliner Look

The next look is a glitter eyeliner look. While this is a bit less intense than the glitter eyeshadow look, it’s the perfect way to add targeted sparkle to your daily look. Here’s how to do it:

Choose Your Eyeliner

Glitter eyeliner comes in lots of shapes and sizes. You’ll have the choice of choosing from a liquid version or a powdered version that you can use an angled brush to apply. If you’ve never used either, spend some time experimenting to find out which option you like the best.

Prime Your Eyes

With this look, you’ll want to start by priming your eyes. Use a primer and swipe a drop or two across your upper lid. Once that has dried, add a bit of concealer or foundation to the top of your lid and allow it to dry completely before you move on to the next step of the look.

For best results, be sure that you’ve washed your face before you prime your eyes, as this removes unneeded oils and helps the primer do its job.

Add a Base Shade

If you want, you can start this look by adding a base shade. Ideally, you want to keep this shade pale so that the glitter eyeliner can pop. Go for a neutral shade with just a bit of glimmer to catch the light. For best results, be sure you choose a colour that won’t detract from the glitter shade.

Swipe on the Eyeliner

Now that you’ve primed the eye and added a base shade, swipe on the eyeliner. For added drama, follow a “Cat eye” shape, swiping the wing of the liner up as you go. Follow the base of your lashes as closely as possible to make them appear full and lush. You may want to add several layers of eyeliner for added drama and depth.

Finish with Mascara

To finish your look out strong, add some mascara to set off the eye and provide some drama. Go for a black or blue shade to add some depth to your glitter look, and apply several coats for thickness and length. Just remember to let each coat of mascara dry before you add the next.

The All-Out Glitter Look

For as much drama as possible, layer several glitter products for an intense look. Here’s how to make it happen:

Start with Primer and a Base Shade

As with all the other looks, you want to start this look with primer and a base shade. Let the primer dry before you add the base shade, and choose a base shade that mimics your natural skin color. This will help your glitter last all day and make the color pop as much as possible.

Add a Glitter Shade

Once you’ve applied the base shade, it’s time to add some glitter. Choose a shade that’s different from the glitter eyeliner you plan to use down the road, and apply it across the upper lid, into the crease, and out a bit into a wing at the side of your eye.

Swipe on Some Eyeliner

After you’ve applied the glitter shade and allowed it to dry fully, add some eyeliner for more drama. Choose a shade that contrasts with your eyeshadow for best results. For example, if you’ve chosen a blue shadow, go with a black glitter eyeliner. Using short, quick strokes, trace your upper lash line with the product and draw it out to the outer corner of the eye. Add several layers for more drama.

Finish with Mascara

If you really want to push this look over the top, you can finish it with some glitter mascara. The fun thing about glitter mascara is that it comes in lots of different colors and shades, so it’s easy to use it as a pop of brightness rather than a simple lash addition.

Look for royal-toned shades in purple, blue, or green and choose one that adds to the colour of shadow you’ve already applied. Apply it to the upper and lower lashes for serious drama.

Glitter Eye Makeup Made Simple

While most girls have been fascinated by glitter eye makeup at one point or another, few know how to use it well enough to get the drop-dead-gorgeous look they crave. Luckily, these simple looks are easy to create and fun to do.

If you’ve never used glitter makeup before, don’t forget to shop around for a brand you like. There are dozens of options out there and finding the right one for you is a great way to ensure you’re making selections that you’ll want to use for years to come.

Once you’ve found your ideal products, keep practising. While mastering a new look can be tough, practice makes perfect, and it is the best way to figure out what you like and what you don’t.

When you experiment with eye makeup over the course of months, you’ll quickly become a pro at creating a beautiful glitter eye makeup look and using glitter like a true makeup master. And, after all, what girl doesn’t want to look great in glitter?

What are your thoughts on glittery highlighter? I love photos I see of people who use a swipe of glitter on their cheek bone for special events like a pride parade, a color run, etc. I would like to try this, but I'm concerned about getting the glitter to stay in place without running down my face and also without smearing away my foundation. Would love to hear your advice!!

@kateniss sorry, I haven't seen your comment that's why I'm answering now!
well, if you're going at an event or whatever make sure that you know which foundation stays on all day long because this can be the trickiest part... You can apply your Glitter with Glitter Glue or False Lashes Glue. Glitter sticks everywhere at least the very thin one :-P When you're apply the glue, do not swipe it too much (because of the foundation). I would recommend dabbing the glue and the glitter on :)

Hi @mvd, thank you so much for that recommendation!! I hadn't thought of using false eyelash adhesive, but that makes sense that it would help keep the glittery in place without smearing too much. I may try dabbing it on with an old makeup brush- do you think that would work well?

@kateniss yes, please use an old makeup brush because I regretted that I used a new makeup brush and now I don't get the glue out of it -.- I mean sometimes you can get the glue out, but I couldn't...
