My Favorite book of all time
“A room without books is like a house without windows, or a body with no soul.”
Books have played a very important role in educating man. They are as old as time and have spread knowledge far and wide. Their significance is still recognized since they are still in use today despite the rapid development of technology.
“Never trust yourself to general expressions; concentrate yourself upon details.”
I have read numerous books and analyzed them all in detail. A great many have impressed me, and influenced me in different ways. However, there was one that really hit deep, and managed to achieve a special position in my heart till this day. It was none other than a book from the legendary series of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle known as Sherlock Holmes. The book was entitled “A Study in Scarlet”, which was the first of the series. Since it was the first, it was the most impactful since I had never read a book like that every before. This book had a captivating plot and inculcated intense suspense. The proceedings of the investigations had me at the edge of my seat and my eyes glued to the pages. The plot twists were intense, and sort of foreshadowed the moral of always analyzing the facts thoroughly instead of being credulous.

The plot revolved around the murder of Enoch Drebber and Joseph Strangerson who were murdered by means of poisonous pills. While all others had different and erroneous conclusions regarding what had happened, Sherlock’s analysis and clever tactics lead him to a completely different outcome which turned out to be true. The murders were actually committed by a cab driver of both the victims known as Jefferson Hope whom no one suspected other than Sherlock due to all the clues and evidences he found and considered important, while others ignored. They were done out of revenge since Enoch and Joseph were responsible for the death of Jefferson’s lover and her father.
“Eliminate all factors. The one that remains must be the truth.”
Sherlock’s logical thinking lead him to believe that all what others were suggesting as to what had happened was false. My favorite scene was the last scene of the first half, when Sherlock pretended to call a cab to go somewhere, and when the driver arrived, he handcuffed him and exposed him, which lead to all other characters, including me, stunned and frozen.
“Reading is a conversation. All books talk, but a good book listens as well.”
The way the book was divided into three parts, first the introduction and gloomy details of the crime, then the emotional backstory, then the conclusion with all the explanations of Sherlock’s methods applied, truly made this a complete package. I would definitely recommend this to other avid readers.
