End of a sock / Die Socken sind am Ende

Nun, ich werde meine handgestrickte Socken nicht mit dem glamuorösen Kostümen aus dem Musical "Cabaret" vergleichen (aus dem die Abschiedsworte im Titel sind), aber sie verdienen einen würdigen Abschied. Sie haben mir gut gedient, durch mehrere Jahre voller kalter Tage.

Well, I won't compare hand knit socks with the fashionable garment worn in the musical "Cabaret" (where I borrowed the parting words in the title) - but they deserve a festive end. They served me well, through years of cold days.

Ich erinnere mich noch halbwegs an den Tag, an dem ich sie gekauft habe, vor etwa fünf Jahren. Ich weiß das genauen Datum nicht mehr, aber es war ein regnerischer und kalter Wintertag und ich hatte einen Termin in Hannover, der wichtig (und unliebsam und wenig erfolgreich) war. Schon an einem sonnigen Tag ist die Innenstadt von Hannover nichts, was sich zu beschreiben lohnt (was die Bomben nicht zerstört haben, das fiel den Stadtplanern in den 60er und 70er Jahren zum Opfer). An einem grauen, regnerischen Tag würde ich am liebsten weit weg sein.

I still remember the day I bought them, about five years ago. I don't know the exact day, but it was a rainy and cold winter day and I had an appointment in Hanover that was important (and unwelcome). On a sunny day the town center of Hanover is nothing to write home about (what the bombs didn't destroy the city planners in the 60s and 70s did) - on a dreadful day I hate being there.

Auf dem Rückweg zum Bahnhof brauchte ich dringend etwas, um mich aufzumuntern und abzulenken. Zum Glück gibt es ein Wollgeschäft kurz davor, sozusagen fast "unterm Schwanz". Und an jenem düsteren und nassen Tag habe ich mir ein Sockengarn in Regenbogenfarben gegönnt: das war genau das was ich brauchte!

On my way back to the station I needed something to chirk me up - fortunately there is a yarn store only a stone's throw away. And on this gloomy and wet day I bought a sockyarn in rainbow colors: that yarn hit the spot!

Aber es war nur ein kleines Knäuel, 50 Gramm. Also nahm ich ein blaues Garn aus meinem Vorrat für Zehen, Ferse und Bündchen; den Fersenbereich habe ich noch mit Stopfgarn als Beilaufgarn verstärkt. Ich mache das mit dem Beilaufgarn nicht mehr und wenn man sich das Bild unten ansieht, sieht man, warum: Ich habe keine Löcher an der Ferse, ich habe sie unter den Füßen ;)

But it was only a small skein, 50 grams. So I used some old blue yarn for the toes, heels and cuffs and reinforced the heel part with darning yarn. I don't do the reinvorcing anymore and if you look at the picture below you see why:I don't geht holes at the heel, I have them under the feet ;)

Ich habe auch kein Rippenbündchen gemacht, sonder Strick Elastic mit verstrickt. Man muss da beim Stricken etwas aufpassen, aber es funktioniert gut (mit Wolle, bei pflanzlichen Fasern ist es nicht empfehlenswert). Und wie man sieht, hält es bis jetzt und ist immer noch elastisch.

There is no ribbing at the cuff: I used a thin elastic yarn that I knit together with the normal yarn. You have to be a bit careful while knitting, but it works well and, as you can see, keeps up.

Aber vier Winter sind eine lange Zeit für ein paar Socken - ich bleibe musikalisch und verwende (leicht abgeändert) den Text von "As time goes by" aus dem Film 'Casablanca':

But four winters take their toll - let's keep the musical approach and use "As time goes by" of 'Casablanca'-fame:

A hole is still a hole,
A sock is just a sock,
The fundamental things apply

Auch wenn diese Socken außer Dienst gestellt werden und im Sockenhimmel landen, ich habe andere, ebenso schöne, Socken die ebenso kuschelig sind und meine Füße warm halten. Aber ich werde sie vermissen, meine Regenbogensocken!

While these socks are decomissioned and go to the big sock stomping ground in the sky, there will be other socks that keep me warm and comfortable. But I will miss my rainbow socks!

The GDR-version of Casablanca

Und jetzt ein kleiner Sprung Richtung Osten zu einem Song, an den ich beim Schreiben denken musste und der vermutlich auch vielen Deutschen unbekannt sein wird. Dabei ist das ganze Album voller wunderschöner Lieder: Ich präsentiere City und ihr Casablance!

And now to something completely different - and probably totally unknown to non-Germans. There is a song titled "Casablanca" by the East German band City (from their 1987 album of the same title - a great album with many good songs) and it came to my mind when I wrote this post.
