Needlework Monday: Socks - again [Eng/Ger]

You can never have enough socks!

(Deutsche Zusammenfassung s.u.)

Those who live in warmer climates might not understand it but living in countries like Germany make socks really important. Even in summer (if it is not that hot as during the last weeks) there are cooler evenings where it get's a bit nippy. Fortunately a knitter (or crocheter) has exactly what helps - a shawl over your shoulders or a nice pair of socks. And let's not talk about winter time where you have socks that are especially warm and cosy :)

I usually have some socks on the needles - 90% of kntting a sock is mindless knitting in the round. And it's a small, portable project perfect for taking with you and knitting while waiting for a bus, at the doctor's et cetera.

This particular pair of socks was started about a month ago. I choose a yarn for it that was new to me: it's a mix of wool, cotton and an elastic polyamid. The cotton was the reason - knitting wool is not nice in warm weather! Knitting with this 'cotton stretch' is quite nice and you get used to the elasticity of the yarn quite fast. I just hope the wool in the yarn makes the socks more longlasting than socks made out of cotton-poly - that's hand wash in cold water only and even with that after a year the socks weren't stretchy anymore.

I knit the socks in my preferred way: toe-up, 2aat, 2 circs. If that's Greek to you here's the explanation:

  • toe-up : I start at the toe of the sock, not the cuff
  • 2aat : knitting two socks at a time and
  • 2 circs : doing that on two circular needles.

I started with Judy's Magical Cast-On (there are tons of videos on the net showing how that's done) and made asymmetric increase:. If you look at the toe area of a foot there is a side with a steep slant and a slower slant. That's how I knit my socks - there's a right one and a left one.

One color socks are booooooring so these socks get yellow toes, heels and cuffs. So after starting with yellow I changed to the blue-green yarn. The heel I knit again in yellow - a boomerang heel with Geman short rows. Now I'm knitting green-blue again till it's time for the cuff - I don't know exactly how long I will make this part. These aren't socks you wear when it's really cold so they can be shorter than my normal socks.

Of course I'm still working on my scarf which is 35 cm long right now.

Lovely yellow toed socks! I just love your neat knit work, so beautiful and smooth. Everyone talks about the joys of knitted or crocheted socks. It’s time I stop buying those thick ones from the store and make my own too! Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing this week~ 😊

I won't say knitting socks is easy. Well, it is - but only after about the tenth pair. Before that it's difficult and aggravating and impossible and... But every problem you encountered and somehow worked out make the socks even more warming even if they don't look that nice :)

Thanks for that heads up! 😄

The colors are soooo lovely <3 The yellow with the blue shades - great. You almost motivated me to try out sock knitting... I love hand made socks, but I do not love to work with dpn or magic loop and I am still intimidated by the tiny size of socks.
You method of knitting both socks at the same time is really tempting (you know my second sleeve... second everything problem)

Yes, knitting two at a time is good for "quirks" like remembering two rows late that there should have been an increase etc. - at least this way both pieces of the pair are the same, whether it's socks or sleeves.

And it prevents "second sock syndrome" where the first sock is knit quite fast and the second one seems to take years and you lack motivation ;)

Your socks are so beautifully knitted and the scarf too! I really like the cheery colours :)

Thank you! I had the yellow skein with me when I bought the green-blue one and immediately knew that this was the right one :)

A perfect match! :)

yes, in Germany socks are very necessary. even in Israel in winter in the apartment I wear warm woolen socks because there is no heating in the apartments and the floor is cold. I really like your socks: they turn out very cozy in appearance. I'm interested in how you finish the cuffs on them.

Yeah, as nice as these hardwood or stone floors are when it's warm, you quickly put on socks when it gets a bit cold. And they make a nice evening on the sofa even more cosy even if it's not that cold :)

I will post a picture of the finished socks!

Your sock make me feel happy inside, @muscara! Way to make it look insanely easy, when I know full well that it is not. LOL. Happy #NeedleworkMonday to you, my dear!

My first five or six pair of socks where a constant battle, the next five pairs I at least knew where the problems where and tried to fix them, then I slowly learnt what worked for me and what didn't.

Now I know how many stitches here and how many rows there - at least for my feet and "normal" sock yarn. With this cotton mix I should have had a few stitches more on the needles and a few rows less for the feet - but it won't matter when I wear them :)

I like those socks ... and your cavalier approach :)

I first had the yellow yarn and wanted something to go with it, buying the other yarn was impulse buying. But now I adore the colours and am thinking about buying another one of the product line, perhaps in red hues.

Wow a beautiful socks! The color combination is wonderful 👍👍👍

Lovely socks! I, too, almost always have some socks on the needles.

It's interesting how a lot of people, even those close to you, tend to make little jokes about "always knitting" and "isn't that boring" and "wouldn't have the time for that" - but they wouldn't say no to receiving a pair of socks...

I love the colour and I didn't know there was that type of 'elastic' yarn and wonder whether it affects the tension @muscara. All the best with the knitting...

„You can never have enough socks!“ , dass ist das Stichwort 😅... irgendwie verliere ich immer eine oder eine kriegt direkt nachm kauf ein Loch :-)
