Halloween Siem Reap, Cambodian Style

in #steemitmamas6 years ago (edited)

Halloween just keeps getting better and better here in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The city streets become alive with locals, expats, and tourists touring in the Halloween threads.

Unlike traditional Halloween activities, like door to door trick or treating, in Siem Reap everybody comes together in the center of town for one big giant street party which just grows bigger and bigger as the hours in the night roll on.

To give you all a little idea of what the streets look like, I found this video made by The Temple Club, showing some drone footage from last years celebrations.

My little Australian children absolutely love celebrating Halloween here. It is an event they eagerly count-down on the calendar each and every year. Most likely because even each year they feel like little celebrities on the street as flocks of people ask them to stop and pose for photos with them.

This is my son Noah, 3 years ago as Baby Hulk. The crowd went wild lol.

Now making costumes in Cambodia you sometimes have to think outside the box with supplies and materials you can use. the year I decided to be a devil I didn't want to end up with cracked messy paint all over my body like my Baby Hulk had the year before as the hours went by. After a quick test of my skin's reaction to cheap motorcycle paint, I was good to go and loved the results. It wasn't hard to get off at all just a good loofa in the shower. Except for those hard to reach spots like inside your ears lol.
Here is my husband @philippekiene and myself.

The following year we decided to go with a family costume. I decided we would go as the Smurfs. Although my eldest child Kurt wasn't so thrilled so he sadly opted to not to join in.

Armed with spray paint, white material, and a stapler we were able to pull off these great costumes. (Note: I am not recommending using spray paint on yourself or your children!!! DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!)

So this years Halloween was fast approaching. Those who follow me know I have a whole heap going on in my personal life at the moment. Having just sent my eldest 3 children back home to Australia to spend time with my terminally ill sick father, I was happy to let the Halloween celebration slip by this year without celebration.

I knew this would be a little tricky to slip by them. Especially because my school I teach at was celebrating book week and we had a dress-up day and I was covered in paint from top to bottom for a story, A bad case of stripes by David Shannon.

The look on my little girls' faces when I returned from work, it was clear that staying in with a scary movie and popcorn wouldn't be an option. I am so glad I pushed my feelings of being mentally and emotionally exhausted because we had a blast and my two little ladies and I made memories together that the three of us will treasure forever..

Noww, planning to skip Halloween meant I had not prepared or even thought of anything they could dress up as this year. Having pulled out their prettiest white dresses and some zombie make-up, and cutting a few frangipannis from the garden, my two Zombie brides left our home proud as punch and loved every single minute of one of Siem Reaps biggest street parties, dancing the early evening night away until the bigger crowds of monsters came out to play.

So now my little ladies are counting down until next year and already thinking about what costumes they would like so we are not throwing it together last minute like this year and they want to know two things:
What do you think our family of 7 should dress up as next year and how do you celebrate Halloween where you are from? Should us your answers below :)

Oh goodness those zombie costumes are amazing, think the relatively simple costume was the best one XD There's a bit of a Shining vibe in the holding hands and back to back ones, think they're my favourites. They've got posing for photos down pat :)

Seems like your Zombie babies are a hit in the streets!!
They look lovely, even though they are Zombies!

Oh my. I love the baby Hulk. Nice green.

He is having so much, I can tell. Little celebrity.

Shame on me we had not celebrated Halloween before. It is not a THING here... Maybe soon...,

Sending mama's love to you❤️

I always believe it's not really what the dress up all about.
It's the fact that everyone is together, that's most important.
So even if it's the most simplest Christmas dinner, it's being all together that's important
