Weevil - A few things you need to know
A weevil is a type of beetle from the Curculionoidea superfamily. They are usually small, less than 6 mm (0.24 in), and herbivorous. Over 60,000 species are in several families, mostly in the family Curculionidae (the true weevils). Some other beetles, although not closely related, bear the name "weevil", such as the biscuit weevil (Stegobium paniceum), which belongs to the family Anobiidae.
Many weevils are considered pests because of their ability to damage and kill crops, but others are used for biological control of invasive plants. The grain or wheat weevil (Sitophilus granarius) damages stored grain. The boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) attacks cotton crops. It lays its eggs inside cotton bolls, and the larvae eat their way out. Some weevils have the ability to fly, such as the rice weevil. One species of weevil, Austroplatypus incompertus, exhibits eusociality, one of the few insects outside the Hymenoptera and the Isoptera to do so.

FACTS ABOUT WEEVIL
- It's family name is of a Latin origin which is - Curculionidae
- There is an estimated value of over 1000 species of weevil in Northern America.
- weevils don't invade and destroy crops alone, they actually invade home, furniture(wooden property)
Weevils actually kill plants ranging from a small garden to even larger farms.
When weevils invade a home, it's considered more as a disturbance than a threat. . Weevils contaminate foods by defecating in the food. Surprisingly, they damage more food than they actually eat.
Stored Product Weevils
A few weevils attack stored grains and seeds. They can be very destructive, and their damage is often very expensive. The most common stored product weevils are:
Cowpea weevils, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.)
Granary weevils, Sitophilus granarius (L.)
Rice weevils, Sitophilus oryzae (L.)
How Do I Get Rid of Weevils?
What You Can Do.......
Most likely, homeowners seeing weevils are dealing with the stored product species. The most important control methods are to find the infested material and eliminate it. Careful inspection of items before purchasing can help prevent getting a new infestation. Products with holes or signs of damage on the packaging should not be purchased.
A vacuum cleaner is a quick way to remove weevils from the walls and furniture. Be sure to take the vacuum outside to empty it so the weevils don’t reinfest the home.
