Passion Fruit

My go-to fresh produce grocer always promotes his goods as the best in comparison to the displays of the other stalls in the neighbourhood makeshift market. His goods are indeed fresh but not always the best in the market. However, he would get a bumper supply of tomatoes or various fruit from time to time and sell at a lower than usual price. Very honest of him to do just that.

Sometimes I see huge baskets of passion fruit of yellow or dull pink colour on sale and the grocer would often urge me to get them while the fruit is cheap. I have bought passion fruit a few times but I have always been disappointed. The fruit may be large but the interior is not completely packed with the juice and seeds. In fact I could get only about a tablespoon of pulp from each fruit.

When I watch cookery shows like Masterchef and Great British Bake Off, passion fruit is often used by the participants for various cakes and ice cream recipes. Unlike what I get here, the fruit is a deep purplish in colour. I could see that when the fruit is cut open, the pulp looks thick and full; looking yummy and so appetising.

I suppose the species of passion fruit over here is different and the health benefits are the same. It is low in calories and very high in nutrients. I love its sweet and tangy flavour and great for making ice cream or just for its juice as a drink.
