Batter Up - Loosening Up at Tee-ball Practice

in #sports7 years ago (edited)

Getting my son acclimate to swinging a bat seemed impossible.. Watch his transformation in the video below.

Not sure when I actually mastered the technique of swinging a baseball bat but one thing is for sure... it takes a lot of practice to become a solid hitter and maintain a comfortable swing. Now I don't want to get all into the mechanics of a proper swing nor will I try to claim that I am a badass in baseball. When I see my son learning, it brings back memories of my childhood when I first started playing baseball.

I was an Allstar

Yes, I developed into a pretty decent player and my baseball career was pretty decent.. played all through high school but of course, theater arts and drama trumped sports and I soon turned my focus to entertainment.

The Transformation Begins...

I must admit.. I didn't think my son would enjoy playing because of all the distractions they have for kids now days. Notebooks, phones and all the gizmos seem to keep the kids inside and away from the sunlight. He would always shy away from challenges as well. It wasn't until last night when his coach finally pulled him aside and worked with him in a little one on one time. At first it was like he was scared to swing the bat and I guess he has plenty of reason.. have you ever held a baseball bat in your hands? You immediately feel the power once you pick a bat up and know without a doubt... you can do some serious damage with that bad boy.

His swings were very short and choppy.. his body tensed up and his doubts limited his ability. It took a few swings to finally realize this and once coach did.. GAME ON

Coach got him to swing that bat back and forth while his body slowly adjusted, loosening up every individual muscle refusing to give into the power of the swing. Finally, his body was loose and his confidence started to build up. If you watch the video, you will see how fast his progression from doubtful and timid to confidently swinging, transitioned super fast. Sure, there is plenty of work to be done before he's swinging for the fences but I personally feel like the biggest hurdle was overcome last night. In other words, It's all up from here..

I will be posting more of my sons progress and maybe even some game footage when the season starts.. What I originally thought would be a huge failure has turned out to be very successful to date. My son is loving the game even more by the day and learning the meaning of "Teamwork". I look forward to watching his baseball game develop and hope he embraces the game of baseball like I did, in little league.

Till Next Time... Adios Amigos
