Early 1900's Interviews with the Elderly

in #history6 years ago (edited)

I found these on my YouTube recommended, these are incredibly interesting in lots of different ways and its brilliant that they are free to watch and I hope YouTube remains in that format. I think with videos like this people will find their own interests in each one, for some it may be the accents, some sound very English which isn't surprising given that these people have lived during the civil war and have close relations with the Independence war. So these people are a link which binds essentially the whole of civilized America's history.

What I find quite interesting is the quality of life they are enjoying, although a very small percent of people will have gotten into the 75+ they all seem in pretty good health and most of them lucid. And for me that's really strange when comparing it to modern ages elderly. The majority of people that get into their 80's don't have a particularly good quality of life and maybe we need to take some lessons from history.

Another great piece of information is the development that has progressed in their lifetime as well as the development since. If you look back at pictures of New York city or watch the background of these videos, the environment is so basic and looks incredibly unrelatable to a member of a developed country. And in reality it wasn't that long ago, my Nan was born in 1934 so just after some of these interviews took place.

What do you take from these videos?

Makes me wonder what people will think when they look back at us in 100 years. I'm sure they had a better diet. There was very little obesity. I like the 100 year old dancing, that's something the elderly should do more now. I think the TV has taken away a lot of the things people used to enjoy doing. I'd still rather live in this era though.
