Concerns Grow in Automotive as Cybersecurity Changes

in #security9 years ago

A recent survey of auto executives showed the biggest concern for future vehicles is cybersecurity. The survey, of over 80 executives, found 31% view cybersecurity and privacy to be the most pressing issue for connected-cars and 35% were worried about safety as a barrier to autonomous-vehicle development.   These concerns highlight an emerging problem for the greater cybersecurity industry.

Pivotal Transition Point

Cybersecurity is expanding from data security and system availability. It is rapidly shifting to encompass digital security, data privacy, and most importantly personal safety!

I talk a bit more about this in today’s video:

The Game is Changing!

Autonomous vehicles, critical infrastructure, and connected healthcare sectors represents the three areas which will first feel the impacts. Of the three, the automotive industry is probably taking the risks most seriously and investing to understand the risks and maneuver to manage them.  I believe they recognize their very business might be on the line.

Most Importantly

Technology convergence is driving change.  Moving forward, we must now look at cybersecurity as encompassing digital protections, personal privacy, and physical life-safety.

We cannot afford to ignore this shift or underestimate the ramifications on risks.

What is the point of hacking a car?

Wherever there is value, an attacker can take advantage. Imagine if your car was hacked and the attacker would not allow it to start, unless you paid $100. Just as an example.

The world is getting more complicated and the bad-guys are taking advantage of it. Crime is evolving fast.
