homemade wood toy (trompo)
During the year of 90's lot of different toys that were invented by filipino people. From what I remember I was aware of social media or mobile phone during at the year of 2000. Maybe we're late of technology that's why the having an advance technology was very expensive. Even so, at that time we had a different games or toys to be played to make us experience a wonderful memories. Most of the game we played, the toys we used were made by our father that was passed by their ancestors. One of the toys was made was this toy named "trompo" or in bisaya "koti." I don't know in english because I'm not sure if they have this kind of toy from foreign countries.
WHAT IS THIS TOY "TROMPO"?
A toy that was made from wood and a nail. It depends on the wood you'll use in making a "trompo." In making of it we will put the nail in the center of the wood and then cut the head of the nail. Don't hammered the nail too deep of the wood because this will be your guide. By using a bolo make a triangular shape of it but it's a round shape as you can see in the image above. By reducing the shape of the wood make sure that the nail will be visible for at least 0.5 inch so that the "trompo" will be spinning in the ground. Also the nail will served as the holder of the rope to make the "trompo" spinning.
In playing it the kid will make the rope rounded the "trompo." The nail of the "trompo" is the guide where you can start tying the "trompo." This is how it look's like after placing the rope in the "trompo."
In spinning it's look like throwing the "trompo" in the ground by pulling the rope. If you're beginner on it I doubt you can make the "trompo" spinning. Because you must calculate the time you'll throw the trompo but then pull it right away. To make it spin, throw then pull.
In playing this toy, it will be hitting other "trompo". Some children are so good into this because they can make the trompo spinning by hitting other "trompo" as well. It's just a simple toy by the children but it guves too muchjoy to them. Some children spent it very long time and some children spent time watching this game, just like this.
"It's not about how fancy but it's about how enjoyable it will be."

Spinning tops have been around in so many cultures, for thousands of years, amusing kids and making them laugh. How lovely that you have them locally, made from wood. :)
