My Coin Collection: One of my many hobbies

in #steemsilvergold8 years ago (edited)

Hello DTube and Steemians!

In this video I talk about and show off my coin collection. :) Awhile ago I came across a @papa-pepper post on a silver bar that he got as a gift from @themanwithnoname. I started following @themanwithnoname and was very interested in his posts and silver collection. I mentioned to him I have a coin collection and he encouraged me to make a post/video about them. So this is for you my friend.

I started collecting coins when I was 11 or 12 or sometime around there, I can't really remember. I do remember using my allowance money to buy new coins. I first started collecting Lincoln Head cents, but then branched out. My favorite kind of coins are really old US Coins and my ancient Roman coins. Although I am pretty excited to start collecting pure silver coins. My parents have a pure gold doubloon, although probably not a true doubloon, I just like saying that word. It is an old Spanish coin from the 1500s to 1800s, I am not sure. It is worth a couple thousand dollars, maybe some day they will give it to me....hehe

I love the sense of wonderment that I get when I look at my coins. Whose hands held this particular coin, that particular coin. What travels and adventures were those coins apart of. Makes me smile. :)

The video shows the coins fairly well, but I also wanted to post some pictures of some of my favorite coins.

good hobbies coin collection..

Thanks! Yes I like it a lot! haha

That's an impressive collection to me. I've got nothing, hahaha. Amazing how old some of those are and look to be in good shape. Any idea what the overall value of your collection is to date?

Well thank you! Oh wow, I have never calculated the value....haha If I were to guess probably over $100 but less then $300. But again that is just a guess. haha now if I had the gold coin that my parents have....oh my my lol

oh wow great collection, a family member of mine collects coins but ones he finds metal detecting, great video mate :)

Thank you man! Wow I think that might be a cool video to do. his your family member close? Maybe do a beach day or something, and video it, and then do an interview, talking about all the coins that were found with the metal detector. haha :) Human interest story for sure, highlighting a neat hobby.

not that close, i keep telling people about this site in attempt to get them on but they just look at me funny, it would be interesting thou

ahhh hahaha. yeah whenever I tell people about it, they look at me funny too. LOL

I learned about the big silver stacking community here on Steemit shortly after I arrived. Ever since I have been very interested in this and have been considering getting involved. I almost made my first purchase two months ago when they released the 2018 Steem Silver Dollar. The design looks so cool and it would be a nice commemorative piece for my first year on Steemit. I think I will still try to get my hands on one.

That is awesome. Yeah I think I will have to get one when I turn 1 years old. lol :) If they are available then. I wish I had more fiat for cool things! haha

Thats pretty awesome , i would love to have a coin from ever major ancient culture. Especially if i could come across a Roman sestertious with Julius Caesar head on it..😁😎🤗. Id do a backflip off an 18 wheeler! Interesting fact ...In ancient Sparta, coins were first ever minted to pay mercenaries !! Cool stuff 😊

Thank you man! Yes that would be cool to have a coin from every era and every major culture. I would love to get my hands on some ancient Aztec or Mayan coins. That is an interesting fact about Sparta! THIS IS SPARTA!!!! lol :)

That doesnt sound too difficult..All we have to do is find out where Ferdinand parked his royal Spanish Armada then we can get some South America coin😑😑...😂

LOL oh my, how epic of an adventure would that be? It would be so fun to be a treasure hunter!

Seems like nowadays the treasure hunters need remote controlled submarines with cameras. The oceans may be one of the last unexplored frontiers on earth..Yes, it would be great to live the Indiana Jones lifestyle wouldn't it 😁😎😎

Yep the treasure hunters are getting super sophisticated! How cool would it be to have something like the Goonies happen. haha find an old pirate ship mostly in tact with all kinds of treasure. LOL Yes the Indiana Jones lifestyle would be amazing.

Very interesting collection, you should add to that the steem coin for sure. ☺

Thank you! Yeah I would like to get the Steem coin.

Awesome Matt! Love the coins! It is a great hobby to have for sure. This is the extent of my collection and I couldn’t be happier 😀

That is awesome! I will get one of those at some point! :)

During the school year we did a $1000 a week silver half dollar hunt. My husband did posts about it. We love hunting for silver. We have started our kids collecting now so maybe someday they'll be able to buy a car or house with theirs. Wish our parents would have had us investing when we were young!!! Keep collecting!!!

Really that is amazing! Yeah I wish I would have invested more and more when I was young! haha could probably retire now! LOL kidding.

That's an awesome collection! Thanks for sharing it.

You have some really unique pieces that are way out of my area of expertise to be able to tell you how rare they are. I don't see how those ancient Roman coins could be worth only $10. If they're authentic, I would imagine they're worth considerably more... but that's my uneducated opinion.

You're right that you have to start somewhere. And it looks like you're off to a good start. There are a lot of different theories about what to collect and what's going to be even more valuable in the future. As long as you're in the game, you have a chance to win it.

Thank you for taking the time to showcase your collection. I enjoyed getting to take a look. I'm glad you've been getting joy out of them and recently have been getting a renewed spark of interest in coin collecting. Hopefully it's a hobby that continues to excite you and eventually be able to reward you. :)

Yeah I am sure they are worth more. They definitely are authentic. The only reason why I thought 10 bucks. Is because I got the shipwreck coin and both Roman coins and the drachma for like 40 bucks. But this was back in 2004. And I worked with the guy that sold them to me, who used to own a ancient coin shop. So he probably gave me a good deal. lol After I posted I went online and started pricing some of my coins. I was way underestimating their value. haha Yeah it is so fun, I can't see coin collecting as a bad thing, or a bad investment. I doubt I will ever sell them though, kind of a fun thing to pass onto my kids someday, granted I have to have kids first. lol

I got the shipwreck coin and both Roman coins and the drachma for like 40 bucks.

That's a heck of a deal. I'd give you that much if you want to sell them. ;) Just kidding. I mean, I would, but you should hold onto them.

I agree, coins aren't really meant to be sold. They are meant to be horded and admired, and petted/rolled on. Ha ha. Then eventually passed on to one's kids.

LOL that is the truth. My next house I would like to have a spare room dedicated to my collections and cool stuff. haha I would love to build or buy a really neat display case were I can display my favorite coins. It would be so cool. haha

That would be nice. Then you could showcase you collections (pun intended) without having to worry about moving them constantly. Fortunately for you, they only build big houses in America, so unless you buy an older house, you should have 6-10 bedrooms to spare. :D

hahahaha you can find small homes here too. LOL my current town home is small. Although if I wanted to I could have the display case now and put it in one of my spare bedrooms. Of course one of the rooms is pretty much a storage room right now. lol

Of all the newer construction, I don't see anything smaller than a 4 bedroom house. That's nice you have some smaller places available, but still have space that you could put up a display case if you so desired.

Now my next home will be at least 4 bedrooms, and an office, and a display room, and an epic movie theater room, and an epic kitchen, etc. etc. etc. lol and an epic large yard for all my fruit trees. lol

So I just watched a few videos on YouTube about pennies to look out for that are worth money. I made a list. Time to go searching through all my pennies to see if I own any of them! lol like a treasure hunt.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I wish I could help, but the travel time could be a bit taxing, especially in some of the states that have really high gas taxes.

Regardless, have a blast searching through them! I hope you find a bundle of rare ones!

Yeah it would certainly be fun to have help. I got through one bag of pennies in a little over an hour. I was able to fill up missing slots in my book, which is cool, but didn't find any rare ones. :( lol The pennies to look out for are the ones with the double stamp images on them on the dates and the lettering. they are worth 50 to 300 bucks.

I've never been good at spotting the double stamps. The examples I've seen looked like regular stamps, so maybe I'm missing something.

That's nice you were able to fill in some gaps. Hopefully the other bags will yield some rarer ones that are more valuable.

yeah I have a neat little coin magnifying glass, but I haven't seen a double stamp in person only in photos, so not sure if I will be able to find them anyways. LOL Thanks that would be sweet to find some rarer ones. I have loads of 1920 pennies. they are a "penny" a dozen...LOL

Woww - finally got to this video @mrchef111! Awesome collection you've got. I only got TWO (2) coins now :') So for me this indeed seems like a huge collection already :D

Very very intrigued by that dragma - whoa - the history this coin carries <3

Well thank you! Yeah isn't it incredible. I wish I had the power to tough the coin and have it allow me to travel back in time and see all the hands that touched it. It would be cool. haha
