Making A bird box! Its so Simple!

A nice thing to watch whilst laying in bed

The winter is already here and before I started to decorate the cabin inside I realized that the birds who I feed from Autumn have been attacking part of the outside and stealing the expandable foam from around the windows (I have since covered those parts up which I left undone being lazy)

I have often here a pair or two or Blue tits and Coal tits, magpies, a Lesser Spotted woodpecker (I think) and another bird of which I have already forgotten its name. We have also wild bees that live on one un accessible side of the cabin and the birds peck at the dripping honey and have over the years destroyed the wall, and we often here pecking but as the cold came I saw birds starting to peck at foam, which obviously they were taking to build nests.

This lead me to deciding how easy it is to make a bird box now I am an adult as it was since primary school I made one before. Just from a single piece of recycled wood that was always in the way, a potential shelf or A BIRD BOX!

Ever made one before?!

The piece of wood.. This is so easy to make :)

Next.. Cut 4 Pieces equal lengths for 4 sides

3.

Set up the sides and mark where to cut the piece for the bottom of the box, you can nail it at this stage and just cut off the rest of the bottom piece if you wish.

Once you have the bottom piece and the 4 walls you can nail it all together with 20mm pins, but to be honest if you have no vice, its a pain in the butt! I used a thin drill bit and then used screws to hold it there and then nailed it and took away the screws.

I only had a 30mm flat bit, or was it 28, I forgotten already. After a search online it was anyway big enough for a Blue Tit. Its good because then bigger birds cant get in an attack the nest.

Just needs a roof now. I left a good 5 cm overhang and you can easily add 10 cm onto the length, but mine was to be put under a roof anyway in a protected place.

And lastly a perch. This I didn't research, and maybe there is (like keeping chickens) a specific size of perch needed for them to grip it.
i just drilled a whole and found a piece of fire wood that fitted in there without any glue etc.

It wont get used this year..

..but atleast they will be used to it for next year, and Ill try make a few as there are some more pieces of wood that I dont need but have recycled. This is where I put the bird box, and banged some pins in so I can hang birdfood from them. I recycled alot of bird food and fat balls, shame I couldnt take it all with me it was an epic amount.

Afterwards I covered and finished off above the window so they would have to go use moss or something! I do need to shave my hair soon and they would love that I bet!

It took around 20 minute to make, thinking to make more with different sized holes for different birds!

In spring I need to remove the wild bees and put them in a box in the garden and then repair that part which will be very epic hahahah..

Big Love and Abundance!

Best thing to do EVER. We have a few for parrots and pardelopes which are the cutest little things.. smaller than a wren or a tit.

Smaller than a Wren? If I remember correct, the smallest bird in Europe is a Wren!

3.1-3.9 inches in length - I think wrens are 3.7 or so, maybe they're around the same size. I compare them to our blue fairy wrens which are bigger than them. They're pretty tiny.

Endangered because logging and blah blah. Climate change 'might' not be real but human impact on the landscape certainly is.

It looks like a Gold Finch had sex with a normal Wren 😲!

Definitly not disagreeing with human impact on the enviroment, thats for sure😉
