Zombie Fruit?!

in #gardening8 years ago (edited)

Have you ever heard of a zombie fruit?

We had heard of this, but know of the plant by a different name. Today we picked up our order at Ames Nursery and want to share a bit about this exciting new addition to our permaculture homestead.

Zombie fruit is a name coined by Guy Ames and is often known as Che, Cudrong, or Chinese Mulberry.

As Guy’s son Dagan talks about in the video, they chose this name because of the fruit’s strange appearance (cross between a mulberry and an Osage orange), the ripening time (Halloween) and the fact that the red fruit leaves your mouth “bloodied” with pigment.

They grow these on Osage Root stock (very hardy native) and this plant is a member of the larger Moraceae family including figs, mulberries and Osage orange, among others.

It has been on our To Get list after reading about it in “Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden” by Reich. We were so excited that we could pick up such a healthy looking specimen from an expert nurseryman. We’ll share more about our full visit in another post!!

We even got to try a frozen sample and boy was it tasty, jeepers!

Listen in as Dagan talks about this unique fruit tree!

Looks yummy. and that root stock looks very healthy. I always think of a trip we took to British Columbia when I see vaguely raspberry looking berries. We were driving down a road so over grown with 6ft tall berry bushes that we literally rolled down the windows and the kids were grabbing all the berries they could eat out the windows. We called those bush berries but not sure exactly what they were.

wow that's soooo cool and inspiring!!!

The Zombie did attracted me come here lol ;)

Didnt know the information about that though.

I like watermelon though so it would go with me I suppose :)

LOL, it's a catchy name!! yes it was quite tasty, perhaps you'd like it :D

Oh, I LOVE learning about new plants and shrubs and trees and when they are food bearing, all the more. I wonder how they would do in zone 7 as that is the zone of my USA place. I really want to get a healthy fruit/nut hedgerow going there and am always trying to consider a good combination of things.

Us too! It’s like meeting a new friend. The nursery is in zone 7 and zombie fruit is hardy.

That’s a great option for hedging. The old style hedge is using Osage orange. The zombie fruit would make a much more edible and less thorny option.

I have never heard of this fruit before or seen it so thanks for sharing it.
It does look pretty delicious since it looks like a raspberry which I love.

You are welcome! It tastes a bit milder (like a watermelon) with a raspberry/mulberry like texture. It was good!

I hadn't heard of them. That's an eye-catching name though. I imagine some people will want to get them just for the name. Are each of the trees grafted onto a root system for better survival?

Yes I think that’s why he tried to rebrand it under that name! And yes they’re grafted onto regionally hardy varieties for survival, but also because of the select cultivar (in this case of Che) :)
