D.Tube Homestead Vlog | Intro to Grafting Trees for Delicious Fruits

in #homesteading8 years ago (edited)

Spring is here and it’s grafting time! In this video I give a brief intro to grafting.

  • What Is It?

  • Why graft?

  • Basic overview

Grafting is an empowering skill that can be easily learned and practiced with some basic information and a few simple tools.

The basics are selecting a rootstock (base plant) and scion (fruiting top) and creating a union between the two (in some cases there is another section bridging the rootstock and scion). Scions from a known and chosen specimen are cut curing the dormant season and kept cool (often in a refrigerator). Through careful and deliberate cuts and some protection, the living inner cambium (where fluids and sugars move throughout the tree) of the scion and rootstock will fuse and create one organism.

It is this marriage of two organisms that are closely related that creates a plant (often a tree, but not always) that has 2 or more separate sets of genetics. What this means is that we can select for characteristics of the rootstock (eventual size of tree, resilience, etc.) and choose superior fruits (bigger, tastier, fewer seeds, etc) by marrying a known rootstock with a chosen scion.

Grafting is an ancient practice and need not be overly complicated.

In our case, we are using wild trees as rootstock (mulberry, hickory, paw paw, plum and persimmon) and grafting improved genetics onto them. This means we need not fuss with soil amendments, digging, or worry about watering needy seedling trees. What this allows us to do is use existing trees to produce more fruit in larger quantities and of better quality with little time and money invested.

To us this is working smarter not harder!

Stay tuned for the next HOW TO video where I will outline 3 types of grafting we are practicing this spring and show a few of the tools we use. A few of the skills I'll demonstrate are:

  • Bark inlay graft
  • Kerf graft
  • Whip (and whip-and-tongue) graft

Thanks for watching and hope this inspires you to get grafting!!

This is exactly what I need to learn! I'm so glad you're doing this video series. I look forward to seeing the next installment.

yay! happy to hear it! we plan on making a video and photo essay with step by step instructions ;) stay tuned!! <3

Wow! This is so helpful and so well put together. Grafting is something I have always been curious about and will be saving this for future reference. Thank you so much for sharing this!!

awesome! so glad to hear your feedback and that you found it helpful! stay tuned tomorrow for the details of How To :D

Is grafting the same as pruning? I have gardens. Thanks for sharing.

no actually. pruning is cutting off plant matter to encourage new growth, while grafting is making precise cuts in order to meld new genetics onto the same plant. if you watch the video, you'll understand.

Howdy you rowdy, nice bicycle stunt! 😉
I´m also happy for you that you got dtube working for you and that they gave you some nice upvote. Just think about, how many clicks you would need on youtube to make this kind of money.
At the moment I am not much into photography and I have never done a video, but I can see the potential of publishing videos on dtube, so if I ever pick this up, I know where to go.

I can't wait to give this a try this weekend. We are going to a grafting class at a nearby orchard. They grow crab apples for cider but we will be grafting local apple trees. I am excited to learn and be able to graft some existing trees on our farm. That is exciting stuff to me :)

Great video and such great skills to share, well done @mountainjewel what treasures you are giving us, very much appreciated x

Thanks for the tutorial ♡
Nice to meet you.
