A common Japanese dish called shabu-shabu is made of thinly sliced beef and vegetables that are cooked in water. This dish is a modern take on the classic one-pot (nabemono) Mongolian cuisine. Its name, which roughly translates to "swish-swish," refers to the sound produced as the cut meat pieces pass through the water.

While beef is the most commonly used meat for shabu-shabu, other meats such as lamb, chicken, pig, duck, crab, or lobster can also be used. With the main course, steamed rice and an assortment of sauces are frequently provided on the side. Traditionally, the meal is shared and consumed in a group setting, with each diner dipping a piece of beef into the central pot of hot water.
