Homesteading Ventures
Recently, I’ve become a believer in more natural alternatives to traditional processed westernized foods. I started investigating ways our family could benefit from small scale ventures on our partially forested acreage.
We’re still undecided, but are exploring a few options. The better half of this relationship will be retiring this summer.
A friend of mine began growing mushrooms.
I decided to let him mentor me in the art and science of mycelium cultivation. He’s a stay at home dad with 2 girls and a young son, his wife works as a hair stylist.
David has been cutting down trees on our property damaged by Irma, he wanted the hardwood for his venture. He comes over and uses his power saw to cut logs and takes what he needs to cultivate his spores.
Not the best photos, taken with my iPhone, David cutting trees on the back forty
Inoculated hardwood logs stacked
David informed me that mushrooms are not plants, which makes them good candidates for forested areas. They don’t require sunlight, have no cellulose or chlorophyll, they are asexual, do not have seeds and reproduce through spores.
Mushrooms need high humidity and the appropriate substrate-he decided to try log inoculation. Oysters and Shiitakes both do well using this method, so he decided to go all out.
Mushrooms are so interesting!
Who would've thought.
Isn’t that a cool picture of the mushrooms? They really are interesting to study and so many varieties. Gazette is up!
Much love my friend. ❤️🐓
They really are cool!
Loved this weeks gazette!! X
Thanks my friend @lynb. We tried to mingle the girls tonight with Henny Penny. Didn’t work very well. They want to hurt her very badly. Makes me sad for HP. Are you doing ok? I am coming to see if you have written a post yet. ❤️🐓🐓
That is so sad :-( what other ways are there to introduce chickens? Animal behaviorist? Or perhaps a calming tablet? I know nothing about chickens..
makes me so sad though and I'm sure it's sad for you too.
We used to have a chicken called Josie who would sit in our lounge on the arm rest of the couch. Perhaps HP will be a good house chicken too? :-) 😘
Beep! Beep! This humvee will be patrolling by and assisting new veterans, retirees, and military members here on Steem. @shadow3scalpel will help by upvoting posts from a list of members maintained by @chairborne and responding to any questions replied to this comment.
unhappily i cant upvote because i have finished yet
That looks amazing! As far as ROI, is it time intensive or effort intensive? I love the idea! I know @armadillocreek has talked about mushrooms. He might be a better reference.
It is very labor intensive at certain times steps of the inoculation period. I may have to at least lend a hand and see how hard it is. A wet log can be pretty heavy. 🐓🐓
Oh my god this is amazing! I have never tried growing mushhrooms nor do I think our weather permits it but I can’t wait to see what happens in your neck of the woods!💜☺️
They sell little table top growing kits so you could grow your own.Googley would probably come racing by and take the whole bunch if she knew you were growing them. She is so lazy! ❤️🐓
I want to try growing mushrooms. We have a lot of wooded property that would be good for it.
Even some wild mushrooms are edible. I am just not knowledgeable enough to be able to tell the difference. 🐓🐓
Same here. There are wild mushrooms around our property. I don't know enough about identifying mushrooms so I don't feel safe eating them.
I recently took to bee-farming and honey cultivation. It's been an amazing experience. Honeybees teach us many things about the natural environment.
We now supply many clients across Nigeria. I must add that we cultivate the best honey around here. Our customers are proud of us.
We are available for export too.
That’s a really great way to make money and it helps with allergies also. 🐓🐓
Westernized foods are not organic.we will going to be the toxic stores as humanity
I'd like to grow mushrooms on our property, as well. Not for profit, but mushrooms act like filters in the body and help us remove toxins like heavy metals. They also remove and neutralize toxins in the soil. Mushrooms are truly amazing!!
Yes they do. Pretty amazing features for something so simple. 🐓🐓
lovely; you should check mine fungifarm🍄;
Indeed. Thank you. 🐓🐓
