On Moshi Tunes Collective and MORE
This year marks my 10th year of creating music.
There were a couple of long stretches where I didn’t produce any songs, so it’s been on and off. But still, it’s freaking 10 years.
So hey, why not do something unique to celebrate this special year?
Releasing my songs for the first time
It’s crazy that I’ve been producing songs for 10 years now but still have not released anything officially. Yes, I have uploaded some of my songs to SoundCloud, YouTube, and even Facebook before. But it wasn’t a thing. You know what I mean?
But this year, I finally managed to release 50 of my songs officially on Spotify, Apple Music, and other digital stores and streaming sites. A first for me!
Creating a “record label”
Guess I’m a guy of crazy ideas.
For 10 years, I have experimented with a variety of genres - from electronic, to rock, to alternative, to folk.
So, why not release my songs under different artists?
That’s when I thought of creating my own “record label”. It’s in quotation marks because I didn’t really have a real roster of artists. Instead, I have my songs and a roster of pseudo-artists. I thought it was a cool thing to do as it would give each of the songs its own space and time.
Whatever that means.
I then had to think of a name for my “record label”.
I chose Moshi Tunes Collective. I couldn’t remember why and how I chose it. But all I know right now is that it sounds cute. And saying the word “moshi” brings a smile to my face every single time.
The artist names
Probably the hardest part of the whole process was coming up with names for my pseudo-artists.
Until I came up with the idea of using song lyrics for my artist names.
To do it, I consulted the lyrics of Toro Y Moi and Foster the People – two of my favorite artists. Why them? Well, I have a copy of their CDs. So, I didn’t have to look far.

Not all of these are from song lyrics though. Some of them are just random phrases I came up with myself. You may want to use one of these if you’re planning to form a band and you’re having a hard time coming up with a name. Yes, go ahead and use the names.
Because I’m officially retiring Moshi Tunes Collective.
Moving forward
I’m officially retiring Moshi Tunes Collective. The “record label.”
While it was a fun thing, and was also pretty unique (not sure though as there might be some who have done the same thing) and weird, well, I decided that, moving forward, it might be best to get the songs under one artist name and, consequently, release under one musical project.
So, I have decided to re-release the songs under Moshi Tunes – the artist.
Next month, I will release my first album under Moshi Tunes that will be composed of 10 of the songs I have previously released under Moshi Tunes Collective, the label. It will obviously be a mixed bag in terms of style and form. And I think that’s cool.
MORE
But the most significant way of celebrating my 10 years comes in the form of this thing I call MORE.
Yes, another name. But this time, it’s not an artist name, nor a label name.
MORE is a support group that I have started on Facebook where artists support one another by streaming one another’s songs through the group’s playlists. We just started the initiative last January and we have now grown into a strong 394 (and counting) number of members. We are starting to see the fruits of our labor in the group as some of us are already seeing our songs on Spotify-curated playlists like Release Radar and Discover Weekly. Just recently, we started an extension group that focuses on genre playlists. The extension group now also has almost 250 members.
We’re excited about what’s ahead of us as we continue to participate and innovate. I will start to report on Steemit the latest updates about the MORE project.
