The two verses quoted in the heading seem to contradict each other, but they do not. On the contrary, they complement each other.

• The first was taken from the epistle to the Romans, where the apostle Paul presents the theme of the Gospel of God (Romans 1:1). Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he demonstrates to his listeners that man is absolutely incapable of saving himself, that that salvation was accomplished only by God, and that it is sufficient to accept that free gift by faith.

• The second verse was written by the apostle James, who developed some practical aspects of the Christian's life. Among other things, he explains that it would not be normal for the believer's faith to go unnoticed. On the contrary, it must materialize in works that God sees and that in general are visible to all.

For Paul, faith is the work of God that produces new life. For James, works are proof of the existence of that new life.

If it should occur to us to boast of the works we do, Paul reminds us: "By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8). If, on the other hand, we allow ourselves to be overcome by laziness, James tells us: "I will show you my faith by my works" (James 2:18).

Let us not forget either of these two realities, and let us thank God for the perfection of His Word.
