Colorful World
Lily-of-the-Valley

Lily-of-the-Valley is a great housewarming gift, a great beginner plant, and a generously thriving plant for shade. Fragrant white flowers appear in spring. Some gardeners, once thrilled by their fast-growing Convallaria majalis, find it to be a nuisance. At first growing happily, does it now grow too fast? Now after flowering, the leaves fade to brown.

In God’s palette of plants, maybe it wants a companion. Something could grow between the spaces of this seemingly carpeting plant, and it wouldn’t even need to be very tall, but it could be.

In his encyclopedia, The New York Botanical Garden Illustrated Encyclopedia of Horticulture, T.H. Everett points out that lily-of-the-valley can be stored refrigerated and forced into bloom at any time of year. So perhaps a “solution” to too much lily-of-the-valley could be as much lily-of-the-valley as possible.
