Chester Arthur Burnett 1910-1976 (The Influencer)

Nach der Trennung der Eltern und einer schwierigen Kindheit in der Obhut seines Onkels, ging Chester Burnett im Alter von 13 Jahren zu seinem Vater auf eine Plantage. Dort lernte er Gitarre und Mundharmonika spielen, denn Musiker wie Sonny Boy Williamson II. oder Charley Patton lebten als seine Nachbarn.

Seine erst späte Erstveröffentlichung, einer für Sam Phillips eingespielten Platte erreichte im Jahr 1951 sofort Platz 10 der Billboard-Rhythm & Blues-Charts. Willie Dixon schrieb einen beträchtlichen Teil der größten Hits Howlin’ Wolfs, darunter Evil, Spoonful, I Ain’t Superstitious und Back Door Man. Burnett zeichnet allerdings für einige andere Hits, unter anderem die Komposition Smokestack Lightnin verantwortlich. Bekannte Bands wie die Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Cream und die Doors hatten mit seinen Stücken Erfolg. Den Spitznamen "Howlin Wolf" erhielt Burnett bereits in seiner Kindheit.
Eines der bekanntesten Alben entstand 1967 gemeinsam mit den Blues-Musikern Muddy Waters und Bo Diddley: The Super Super Blues Band. Zusammen mit B. B. King, Albert King, O. V. Wright und Luther Allison hatte Howlin Wolf seinen letzten Auftritt, das war im November 1975 in Chicago. Zwei Monate später verstarb er bei einer Herzoperation in Chicago.

After separating his parents and having a difficult childhood in the care of his uncle, Chester Burnett went to his father on a plantation at the age of 13. There he learned to play guitar and harmonica, because musicians like Sonny Boy Williamson II. or Charley Patton lived as his neighbours.

His late first release, a record recorded for Sam Phillips, immediately reached number 10 on the Billboard Rhythm & Blues charts in 1951. Willie Dixon wrote a considerable part of Howlin' Wolfs greatest hits, including Evil, Spoonful, I Ain't Superstitious and Back Door Man. However, Burnett is responsible for several other hits, including the composition Smokestack Lightnin. Well-known bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Cream and the Doors had success with his songs. Burnett was nicknamed "Howlin Wolf" as a child.
