Super Heroes in Turkish Cinema #2 : Kilink at Istanbul

In the Turkish film industry, domestic comic strips mostly affect historical films. Foreign comic books affect Yeşilçam's superheroes. The only exception is the Cici Can movie. Cici Can -created by Bedri Karaorman- goes to Heaven and falls in love with an angel named Huriye. The comic book describes Cici Can's adventures on earth. When the character was popular, it was transferred to the film by Ertem Göreç in 1963. Apart from this example, Yeşilçam's superheroes are adaptations of foreign comics. Because the main goal in these films is generally to produce fast and profitable products. For this reason, foreign comic book characters -which are popular abroad and in the world- have started to adapt rapidly. But the desired success has not always been achieved.

Marvel's popular comic book character Spiderman was adapted to Yeşilçam in 1966 with the film Örümcek Adam, but he could not have been very long-lived and could not see the desired interest. However, Killing / Kilink, which is based on an Italian sado-erotic photo-stroy character, has become the most popular adaptation of the period and the film has turned into a series. Kilink films, adapted by Yilmaz Atadeniz, made great revenues in Anatolia. It helped to understand the sociological structure of this society and the cinemas of the current anticipatory period.



The Phantom, created by Falk, appeared in the same year under the name Kızılmaske / Red Mask with two adaptations, which featured the same character. Kilink and the experience from the sector showed itself here and showed the streets were attempted to be reflected. When these are done, erotism, which is one of the factors that bring success to Kilink, has taken place in the front panel. Therefore, the version that is adapted to Red Mask and Yeşilçam in the original comic book is completely different. So, how this weird movie was successful? Answer is eroticism. With the discovery of this achievement, marginalization quickly began to be used in Yeşilçam's other comic book adaptations. The society wanted to see the life style of the Europe on its own. They wanted to see eroticism, violence and wealth. The country was poor and emulate Europe. This directly affected the films and audience psychology. The society's cultural structure and religious values nourished this desire for violence and eroticism. The modernization process of the cinema hasn't yet begun.
