Happy Snappy Ecologist (Summer Catch Up): Banded Demoiselle

These beautiful damselflies are my constant companions along the riverbank during the summer. I took so many pictures of them that I'm only just getting around to going through them all so I can share some with you!

The males are the most visible with the striking dark band on their wings.

The females are more camouflaged with their green bodies and plainer wings but I think there are also less of them. I quite often come across them further from the water - resting up on a tall plant. Perhaps they are getting a break from the attention of the many males.

It's always amazing to zoom in on insects and in this case we can see just why these guys have a reputation as the fierce carnivores of the insect world. I wouldn't want to be a midge in those mouth parts!

Finally I was lucky enough to come across this mating pair. Aren't they beautiful? I love that they make a heart shape! The male clasps the female's neck whilst the female bends her body round to join with the male.

The last word of this post must go to my patient golden labrador, whose walk is often put on hold whilst her owner gets lost in a world of macrophotography. I call this photo 'I won't look at you until you put the camera down!'

I have made some changes to the usual formatting codes I use for getting all my photos in the right place......it looks good on the preview - just hope it works in the actual post!

Happy Snappy Ecologist: Rambling through nature makes me very Happy and I can't resist getting Snappy with my hand-held Panasonic Lumix FZ45 with clip on Raynox 150 macro lens. This helps me share my love of Ecology with others and reminds me to identify and find out more about different species when I get home. Enjoy!

So the formatting didn't quite work........anyone know how you get two photos side my side instead of one above the other? Also how you get it to make a photo that's not the first in the post to be the thumbnail?

Also how you get it to make a photo that's not the first in the post to be the thumbnail?

I'm still trying to find out about this. Based on some old posts, it's
image
. The hack used to work i think, but not now.

As for side-by-side photos, I think you'd need to use tables. Just use google spreadsheet or excel, insert the image url on side-by-side column, then convert it to markdown using: https://donatstudios.com/CsvToMarkdownTable

Great photography btw, and welcome to Steemit!

Yes, I tried the h1 trick in this post so I guess it does no longer work. I'll have a play with your side by side trick - thank you! Glad you liked the pictures and thank you for the welcome :)

I use https://ipiccy.com/ collage to get photos side by side :)

Thank you - I'll try that too! Faffing about with photos takes me agggggeeees so it would be good to try and find a few new ways.

I hope it works for you.......I do all my editing there, although the site is pretty slow. But maybe is just my old computer lol

wow such pretty things!

Outstanding shots................I love macro photography especially insect, but it's very hard with my Canon ELPH 300. I Googled you camera, because I am planning to by a professional camera with macro lens soon, I am just not sure which one. Everybody have a different opinion, so will see. I definitely love your photos very much :)

Thank you for your positive comments :) I didn't exactly choose my camera - my brother very kindly gave it to me in exchange for lots of organic fruit & veg (which I'm yet to provide him with!) and then I got the clip on lens as a birthday present. I suspect that if you really wanted to get into macro photography a digital SLR with a proper macro lens would be the best if you can afford it. Mine is a bridge camera and I confess that I haven't even looked through the manual yet so just use it on the auto settings. The clip on Raynox lens for macro is great but not the easiest to use and I largely have to focus by being exactly the right distance from the object (about a hands length). I would love to be able to get a better depth of field with it so I can have just a little more of the subject in focus. That all said - I'm really pleased with the shots I'm getting - even if they are a bit fuzzy around the edges they're usually still good enough for me to identify things from and that's my number one purpose! The whole kit is not too bulky and the cheaper end of decent cameras. I'll look forward to seeing your pictures!

Thank you so much for sharing your valuable information my Friend. And nice to meet you by the way. That is very nice of your brother to give you such a great camera wow. I got my from my daughter, but as I said it is very basic. Anyway, I will sure come to you for advice when I am ready to finally buy a professional one. I like the idea of auto setting, at least for the beginning until I get more comfortable with it. Oh and not to forget, I've seen lots of photos and don't see anything wrong with yours..............they are truly great. Keep up the good work 😊

Thank you! There are some truly fab photographers here on steemit so worth asking around and finding out which cameras people are using and how they find them. :)

Oh yes they are and I know few from other social network sites and couple in person. So I will be asking for advice some of them. Who will have time to answer is another story lol.
