Who knows what the long term effects of these contaminants will be. When will we truly hold ourselves and our leaders accountable for what we are doing to our world?
There is a mass of overwhelming evidence pointing to serious environmental degradation and we are totally responsible for that.
Much of this evidence was concealed, ignored or dismissed by vested interests . We now know exactly what is going on and I agree we need to take charge of our own consumption behaviors and find people who have the environment as their main priority.
Charging the public for using plastic shopping bags is ludicrous. Don't give them the option. Stores should only provide paper bags or sacks and get rid of the plastic bags altogether.
My mother had one shopping bag. It was made from hemp. It lasted her a lifetime.
I disagree about the paper bags. Trees aren’t that much of a renewable resource, given the YEARS it takes for them to grow enough to produce our paper needs. Besides, paper bags are a draw for vermin – specifically roaches and rats.
However, reusable grocery bags make much more sense.
They need to just use them without charging customers anything more. But, maintain the bag return bins like they have for plastic grocery sacks. Do they do that in the UK? The plastic grocery sacks are not recyclable, so stores have a bin where you can drop off your plastic grocery sacks when you return to the store. It seems reasonable to me to do the same thing with reusable bags, which the stores could then sanitize (as long as the bags aren’t actually soiled) and use them again at check out.
The paper bags can be sourced from sustainable forest in the short term.
For the long term switching to hemp bags makes more sense.
It is quite horrible what we have done to our own food supply.
It's just way out of control. I remember in the 1970's when we were first told that the fish (Tuna mainly) were full of mercury and that eating Tuna was a very bad idea.
The FDA sourcedoesn't make for good reading either. The FDA have found that just about every fish we consume has varying levels of Mercury!
These micro-plastics are a relatively new discovery and we know the damage we have already done to the environment?
How long can we as a species survive when we are destroying the planet daily.
We will of course go the way of the dinosaur. The earth will continue to exist but in a much sorrier state than when we arrived.
It makes me rather grateful that I, hopefully, won't live long enough to see the end times. I can't imagine the sense of impending.doom that kids today must feel.
I'd like to leave the planet in better condition for my grandchildren.
Isn't it up to everyone to do what they can to help clean up the place?
Simple changes can turn this around.
"Think globally...act locally"
To borrow the title of a great book.
I feel like my little part is insignificant when I watch the horrors that this government is inflicting on the earth. I hope we can make a difference, but I'm worried.
An ocean is made up of tiny little drops of water. Every drop counts. ;)
I have had a hard time staying positive lately...keep reminding me that I am making a difference!
Wow .. Nasty, wonder what other foods have sucked up human garbage?
We sure have made a mess of the planet and it's coming back to bite us now. @manorvillemike
